Do the students go home on weekends?

To what extent is MSU a "suitcase school" that empties out on weekends. As an out of state student, how much fun is there to be had on Saturday and Sunday (besides home football days, of course)?

For there being such a large population of in-staters, I was surprised to see that a lot of students stay on campus the majority of weekends. There are certain kids who go home every weekend, but for the most part these are the kids who are homesick the most and not having very much fun at college. Most of my in-state friends (aside from thanksgiving) went home once or twice during weekends but that's it. And nearly everyone stays on campus during home-football games, obviously. When the Michigan vs. Michigan State game was at Ann Arbor this semester though, there was barely anyone on campus for just that weekend (because they were mostly all at Ann Arbor). On most other non-football weekend weeks, there are overall less students on campus but not by a significant margin. As for "fun" on Saturdays and Sundays, I'm not quite sure what you mean. But there's always parties to go to on Saturdays (or if you are more into shopping/eating out, almost everything is open way late on Saturdays), while Sundays people sleep in for the most part and then chill with friends and do homework the rest of the day.

I know few who go home during the weekends, but that's due to home being close by ( like within 30 minutes). From my understanding ( and what others have said) there is always something to do on campus ( including the weekends). Even if your looking for something to do off campus, there are about 3 good malls in the area ( one outlet). Across the street would be downtown East Lansing with many resturants, bars etc.... If your talking about parties, I've heard most are on Thursdays.

most people i know at MSU who are in-state [including me] went home 3-4 times this semester on weekends. so about once every 3-4 weeks. a lot of people stay, you'll be fine.

thanks. anybody else?

Being an out of state student I've only been home for winter break, but I remember a lot of people going home for Labor Day weekend.

It varies. I live about an an hour and 15 minutes away so I'll carpool home every three or four weeks. Lots of people stay up on weekends as there is plenty to do (besides school work!)

To me at least, the campus feels very dead on non-football weekends, but that is probably due to everyone just chilling in their dorm and what not. As for me I live about 35 minutes from MSU so I went home maybe three times throughout first semester.

My son comes home once every 4 weeks.
