Do they REALLY check facebook?

I really can't imagine that admissions officers have the time to check Facebook for everyone they consider. They already have to read thousands of essays, recs, etc. and that's a whole lot of extra time.

I agree with those who have pointed out the practicality of trying to checkout FB for all applicants. Having said that, I would not be surprised if for some reason, a few individuals were checked out. E.g., it is a close call between two individuals and they want something more. Or there is some other reason that makes them feel they would be helped by looking. In this scenario checking say 50 or 100 unique applications is very doable and likely done.

Having said this, you should know that there are folks who can see your FB info regardless of setting. Sometimes access is given for various reasons (e.g.. research). Under these conditions there is not guarantee of privacy. Ditto on the caution, don't put up anything you would not want the world to see, because in the end what's on the internet travels across the internet.

I have to repeat: there is NO upside of having pictures of you on FaceBook that show you drinking underage or doing anything else that puts you in a bad light. So any downside, no matter how small or how speculative, means that you shouldn't do it. Are you absolutely certain that there is nobody among your "friends" or the friends of your friends who might be willing to do you harm?

how can they identify anyone on CC?

Are you guys serious"?? they ACTUALLY check FB?? that is so lame.. lol

what's wrong with alcohol? bah.

You guys are all being paranoid androids. He's in germany, it's legal. It's no different than me tagging a picture of myself holding a can of sprite...

Hunt:

I really disagree..it's really fun. And that anyone would judge you based on some PICTURE taken out of context is ridiculous. I'm sure it happens, which is what bothers me so much, but I highly disagree with the practice.

I've posted this link before, from The Brown Daily Herald, titled "Admissions Officers Poke around Facebook."
Admission officers poke around Facebook - Campus News

I don't know about admissions officers, but they aren't lying about employers. After I interviewed for a summer internship last spring, my future supervisor asked the winter intern to try to find me on MySpace and Facebook. They couldn't find my MySpace and my Facebook was basically on lockdown to all but my friends, so they had no luck there, either. Even so, I make a point of keeping potentially incriminating details hidden, and whenever I talk to prospective freshmen, I warn them that it can (and did, for me!) happen! :)

..why woudl there be incriminating stuff on CC?

untag them.

yeah employers will try ti find your myspace or facebook so lock them down

^ watch out if your profile pic has you holding a gun

As much I hate my school, I can be grateful that at least the people are not spiteful or pathetic enough to try to wreck someone's chances at admission.

Most of my son's friends deleted their myspace accounts before applying to colleges. I am not sure what they can see or not see but it seems to be well known that it's not always good to have a myspace.

Beer isn't that big a deal. Shouldn't be bad.

Seriously, I don't believe adcoms can check ANYTHING if you make your facebook/myspace/etc PRIVATE. didn't we check this box saying that our info would be confidential if we wanted it to be, when we signed up? ppl talk about this program they use to 'hack in.' Mark Zuckerberg wouldn't be too happy about it, wouldn't you say?

is a totally different thing. employers do background checks that tell them most of your past for the last 20 years or so. Even for jobs that are not important but give you access to either money or information.

Private schools check facebook and myspace when they hear about a student in jr high or hs that is involved in something inappropriate.

Think about this carefully...our hs counselor is close to an admissions officer at a very large very popular college. If the school asks for 2 recs and a student sends 4, if the admissions office is very busy, they will look at which ever rec is on top in the file. This is denied publicly by ad offices. But she is adament that with 20,000 files and 10 or pieces of paper in each, they do not want more than is necessary. 4 recs is just too much reading and there is no time.

Given the time limitations, I truly cannot imagine any ad office taking the time to look applicants up UNLESS something on the app looks false or unless it is borderline and used as a way to pick between a few kids. even then, it would only be used to "catch" you in a lie or misrepresentation.

Seriously should be outlawed...
