If your mother only makes 30-40k you should still be covered by their no loan policy. DO check with financial aid asap.
@thumper1 NU is the school I’m at now that I would be transferring from to a state school, mostly due to not being happy here and partly due to them starting to lower my financial aid. I just realized I hadn’t mentioned that before you mentioned NU. Sorry for the confusion. So the question was basically will I have an easier time getting into grad school and graduate assistantships for SLP if I stay at NU for undergrad?
Also, I would probably apply for hospital setting type jobs. I heard certification is a bit different for that, but yeah, that is off topic.
@MYOS1634 but the loans were in addition to meeting financial need, not included in it. It was basically: EFC=X. Financial aid=X. Also you can take out loans in addition to that if you wish. I just realized this now after checking again.
NU is a highly regarded undergrad speech path program. That being said…getting accepted to a grad program will largely depend on the strength of your application…not the name of your undergrad school…or even your undergrad degree.
Something isn’t right with your financial aid story. NU guarantees to meet full need, and doesn’t change financial aid awards midstream…unless your grant award maybe had a GPA minimum requirement that you didn’t meet. Some grants have this component.
You need to go and talk to the NU financial aid folks ASAP. Something isn’t right.
NU doesn’t do this…something isn’t right.
By any chance…did your parents do an IRA or TSA rollover in 2016? Did I ask that already??
@thumper1 you didn’t ask that. The only major change I can think of is the job I mentioned above. I just texted my mom about the EFC change tho and if it’s because of the job and she just said maybe.
What is the NU no loan policy? Is it for students with an EFC below a certain amount?
What was your summer income in 2016? And how much of it was also sitting in the bank the day you completed your financial aid forms.
You need to go and talk to NU financial aid ASAP. Didn’t you say your FAFSA EFC was actually lower? If so…there must be something on your Profile for 2018-2019 that is making this increase happen.
Are either of your parents self employed?
@thumper1 my mom got a job. She didn’t have one before.
I don’t know if it was my FAFSA efc or just the one NU calculates, but it was lower, cuz of the job.
Did you have an auto $0 FAFSA EFC for this current academic year?
Did your mom get the job in 2016?
I don’t know what the FAFSA efcs have been, only what the total efc has been for NU and that it dropped between last year and this year. I got full Pell Grant last year so I guess it was 0? This year no federal grant.
And she might’ve gotten it in 2016. She had income to include this year and not last is all I know, so that must be the reason. I was worried they would give less aid because of her new income but she seemed sure it was too small to have an impact. She was wrong, is all, I guess.
@thumper1 forgot to tag you again
If you didn’t get any Pell Grant, something’s definitely wrong with our FA.
@MYOS1634 why? Not everyone gets pell grant right?
No, but the threshold is 45k I think so you should still qualify for Pell. And NU offers a near full ride for families that make less than 65k.
@MYOS1634 I didn’t even get a full ride when my mom was unemployed though cuz my family has some money saved from when I had 2 parents making decent paychecks, so there’s definitely more than income taken into account.
Ah yes. Savings do count!
