Do we not get to choose dorm?

On housing application, it only allowed me to choose between single or double room. So does that mean the residential hall we are going to be placed in is random?

It’s random. We rank our preferences in first year options and residential colleges, but we don’t get to request a specific dorm. :(

it only had choice for hereford, brown, and international residential. why can’t i choose alderman?

Brown, Hereford, and the IRC are residential colleges that you have to apply for; that’s why you can rank them. The Alderman and McCormick dorms are exclusively for first years, and they aren’t letting us choose between them anymore.

unfortunately we can’t choose, however now you don’t have to worry about making the right decision

Brown college apps due June 5! I talked to another 4th year graduating this year who wished he had lived in Brown his first year instead of New Dorms… :)

Ahhhh! I’m debating whether I should apply to Brown. I love the application, but I also want to live with first years.

You WILL live with first years…just not as many as in the residence halls. :)

The Brown app reminds me of a line one of my colleagues says sometimes: funny is the new smart.

Actually a very interesting thing to note is that we managed to find apps back to the early 1990s and some of the UVA app questions are in there (esp. 1991-92 app)!!! Weird or what?? http://www.virginia.edu/browncollege/doc/applications/(1991-1992)bc_application.pdf

There are 50 first years in Brown, and 250 upperclassmen. If you think it’s not the right time for you to live in Brown, you can always apply next year. But I wouldn’t trade my first year in Brown for anything. UVA wouldn’t be the same without Brown for me. I have to student teach in a year and I find it improbable that I can make the Brown parking situation work for me so I am debating getting an apartment but it’s breaking my heart. :'(

Wow. That’s funny that the UVa app had some of those questions.

If you don’t mind me asking, did you make a majority of your friends in Brown during your first year?

Define friends. Close friends? Acquaintances?

I am somewhat close (on friendly terms definitely but not hanging out 24/7) with the other Brownies from my first year. I love living with them. Brown is really great in that people will probably be friendly with you just because you live in Brown too. Brown is also really social, you can just go eat in the Brown room in Newcomb Dining Hall and meet Brownies that way, or go to Tucker lounge for a social event (or just any time) and meet people in there too. There’s always someone to hang out with and get to know.

My closest friends: my roommate, who was a first year Brownie, and we hung out every week until we realized we should be roommates… A girl from my foreign language class (2 years every day with a class makes you close) who I convinced to apply to Brown and now we’re inseparable… And a girl from one of my clubs. Clubs are a GREAT way to meet people. I am just about as close, or closer, to the people in my clubs as I am to the Brownies I am friends with.

I know a lot of people become best friends with their suitemates/hallmates… I really enjoy hanging out with people in Brown and if I hadn’t become so close with the people from my classes/clubs then I probably would have just been close friends with the Brownies. There is a group of people in Brown who (just about) exclusively hang out with other Brownies. I always liked being able to get away from the drama associated with people I live with, and hang out with people I can kick out of my dorm at the end of the night. I also had a lot of drama having a big group of friends in high school so I think I wanted just a few close friends here.

First-years should know that even in RCs, first-years often get assigned in such a way that they all live close to one another, with some upperclassmen rooming sporadically among their “section” (and not just the RA). At least that’s how it works in the IRC. Of course, in an RC, everyone else is readily accessible in the bathroom, the common areas, the lab, and the other side of the hallway.

first years in brown are pretty well dispersed throughout… but your roommate is always a first year. there’s a 1 cr class they make you take once a week that basically entails you socializing with other brown first years. it’s pretty great. it wasn’t ever a concern that i wasn’t surrounded by first years… if that’s your #1 priority then go live in first year dorms. regardless of age, brownies are very cool people and i would rather live surrounded by people i get along with than other people who are my age who may or may not get along with me.

I’m glad that if I live in Brown, my roommate will be a first year. The 1 cr class sounds nice, too. Now, I need to make a decision. Hmmm…

one thing that you should definitely not discount though is that in the traditional 1st year living areas, you will have more opportunities to meet other first years that you might not otherwise meet

while brown college is a good option, if you really want to meet lots of new people in your year the first year dorms are a good way to go.

i do agree that if you think you will be “missing out” and will regret it, then wait a year to live in brown and give first year only dorms a chance. if you’re struggling to make the decision it might mean you should wait until you’re an upperclassman to live in brown. most people i know who have thrived in brown as a first year had no qualms or regrets. but don’t discount it - there are a lot of first years who get super involved in other things (usingers, first year players, wash soc, etc) and many a brownie has gone on to live on the lawn, so uguides/jeff/etc members live in brown also (though on a smaller scale). it’s ultimately your decision and you’ll enjoy wherever you end up living :)
