Do we only need Common App for Caltech?

I got an E-mail:

"Just a short note to let you know that Caltech’s Freshman Application is now available. Caltech now accepts exclusively the Common Application for freshman admission. We strongly encourage students to apply online at www.commonapp.org. Detailed application instructions are available on the Caltech Admissions Office website."

Maybe it's because I have bad English, but does "exclusively the Common Application" mean that the Caltech Supplement is no longer required?

No, the Caltech supplement is part of the common app. The common app knows this and will give you the Caltech supplement when you tell it you are applying to Caltech.

Ben, what was the rationale behind picking the common app? It seems like each supplement might as well be its own app.

okay....so just to make everything clear: all parts of the supplemental apps must be completed; there are no optional parts. is that right?

and off the subject: when applying early action, one must take the October SATs in order to apply in time. correct?

rahrah --Yes on both counts.

halfthelaw -- it does make the repetitive parts of the application (basic info) more efficient, and it is an easier way of getting the app to us electronically than our previous provider.

But the Common App also includes an essay of its own (beyond basic info). Will the CA essay be read and considered alongside the supplemental essays?

Of course we will read that essay! :-D

Yeah, that's what I thought... the supplement just seemed so much more techish that it made me wonder.
