Hi, everyone. I’m a caucasian latino whose family mostly hails from Argentina and who speaks very fluent Spanish. Over the past few weeks, I’ve been trying to find whether or not my background would make me a URM to most colleges, but I’ve found most potential answers quite lacking. Even though I qualify for the NHRP, some people have told me that being latino only warrants URM status if the ethnicity is combined with being non-white. Does anyone here on CC know exactly what criteria there are for latinos/as to be considered URM? Thanks in advance!
My understanding is that it is more country driven as a bump for being latino. You’ll probably get a small bump but don’t expect a big one. I’m sure it varies from school to school.
It’s not so much whether you are a URM but rather whether a particular college or university wants to take Latino identity into account and how. That can be affected by region and a university’s demographic challenges. Some campuses that are trying to diversity would like more Latinos regardless of national background as long as the applicants meet admission requirements. Others distinguish among Mexican American, Puerto Rican and other Latinos. Some universities will consider your NHRP distinction regardless of your race. In some states (e.g. California and Florida) there are many Latino applicants, and thus it becomes less of a factor. In California, state universities cannot take ethnicity into account for admissions. Todo depende…
