Do you care about the environment?

Conservation, etc?

Personally, I find it very amusing that humans are polluting their own environment. It's just very amusing from an external perspective, since it seems so inevitable of human nature to do that before realizing the consequences of one's actions. The environment's going to be destroyed by the Sun anyways.

On the other hand though, I do think that a lot of environmental damage is completely unnecessary so I take steps to reduce waste-unconvertable-to-organic-materials whenever possible. I'm vegetarian and I generally feel bad whenever I buy something and have to throw plastic wrappers away. And I think that a lot of vital information gets permanently destroyed along with the destruction of rainforests.

Sort of. I mean more than most people, but I am not a ****ing nut.

i think the whole global warming issue is a bit exaggerated, and its kind of hard to care about something thas being distorted on a daily basis - but if the truth is viisibly accessible - as if you live in a place where forests are being destroyed, then I think it's important to take action - but for me the only environmental problems are our broken sprinklers which are causing our grass to dry up :P

I just convinced my parents to buy a hybrid for our next car(bad thing is I live in an area where driving a lot is required; walking is unreasonable). We just recently switched to a wind energy provider also.

I clean up the highway on weekends too with an environment/democrat joint group. It's really not enough though. Waste production is so engrained in our culture that even things we don't think about are ultimately detrimental.

Anyways - I don't get involved with environmental conversation because I know that my individual impact will be very small. Of course, if everyone thought that way then the environment would be in much worse shape than it is now - but my actions are unlikely to change the actions of anyone else and so if I choose not to actively participate, it's unlikely to do much (since I have other priorities)

I care about the environment very much. I am thinking of majoring in environmental studies and becoming an environmental lawyer. There are so many easy things people can do to help the environment and they don't.

Like what? What can I do?

Hmm. I care immensely about the environment, but at the same time, I know that my individual actions, or even the steps that the United States takes, will leave a negligible effect on human society's overall decimation of the environment. Instead, I think that pressure needs to be placed on developing countries (India/China/etc) to heavily cut down on their pollutions. Preventing the damage that is done to the environment is not one where the many follow the strong; it needs to be cut down by every country.

Why can't we, the US, set the example and clean up our country before we place pressure anywhere else?

Because then we wouldn't be America, we'd be Europe. ^^

India and China should be encouraged to develop though simply so the standard of life for those living there will increase. It IS up to the already industrialized nations to bear the brunt of cleaning the environment. India for starters needs to just get water to people.

For many people, this is how the costs of environmentalism are divided.

America: develop a "friendler" version of a Hummer

Rest of the World (particularly countries like Brazil, India, and China): deny themselves basic necessities

I want a Toyota Prius very badly. The US definitely needs to take the steps before other countries do because we are more financially able to do so.

I'm surprised that conservatives haven't jumped on the environmentalism bandwagon, because it's a somewhat subtle way of trying to preserve the global political-economic status quo. Keeps power and influence squarely in America and Western Europe.

But that would mean regulating business. Pretty much the cardinal sin of the Republican party.

I care about the environment more than the average person. I totally flip out when people litter, and I am so frustrated with our government!

I'm not exactly an environmentalist or whatever, but I guess I do my part. I don't litter, I recycle when I can, but other than that, I'm clueless when it comes to the environment!

I guess I care about the environment but like another user mentioned, I'm not a nut.

I don't litter because it is our duty as citizens to keep our nation beautiful.

However, I STRONGLY believe that the global warming thing is incredibly exagerated and a leftist cause. For example, all those chemicals in our air, what are we to do? I mean, even if we cut down everything and went back to the middle ages, global warming would still happen.

Also, there are other theories and again, the global warming cause has been supported by the media but it's not the only explanation. In the last 100 years, the average global temperature has only increased .5 degrees. It really could be anything.

And then again, there are more important things to care about, like family, been happy, and money.

Ha, don't even get me started on this. Seriously. My friends and I get into intense debates over global warming/other environmental issues all of the time. It gets VERY heated. I'd probably scare a lot of posters if I started... because, once I start, I become a crazy person =)

I care about the environment if there's something in it for me.

@ LesOs - Exactly the same situation with me. I've barely avoided fights.
