I took the PSAT as a Freshmen this year and screwed up (Got a 170).

However I still keep getting emails (and snail mails) from colleges ?

For Ex : Stanford's EPGY (Education Program for Gifted Youth) emailed me and asked me to apply. I mean do they do this for everyone or the people they think have a chance. Should I consider applying (How's the competition for EPGY) ?

Also Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (email) and Simon's Rock College of Bard (snail mail).

I mean my PSAT score sucks and is probably way out of their league.

So that you'll keep their school in mind and apply. If they know you're not the same caliber as their average student, it'll increase their selectivity ranking when they reject you. If you are what they're looking for, they'd love to have you. They get a list from collegeboard of who scored above what score and all those people get mail from them. Marketing, marketing, marketing.

But study hard, get a higher score on your SAT, and those schools will go begging some other student to apply w/ lower scores while you have a decent shot of getting in.

170 PSAT score for a freshman is excellent -- and they know that is will improve with just more years of schooling. It does put you in that general range of students who take academics seriously. Just wait until you take the PSAT in sophomore and junior year -- my son gets about 10 emails a day and about 5 pieces of mail a day. At first, he thought it was kinda cool to be wanted -- but now it is just a pain in the ***

My SAT is 2150, and I applied to Ivies, Duke, WUSTL, etc.

You have what it takes.

And to add on to what abiste said, I took a Kaplan course which helped, but you really don't need to spend all of that money if you can get yourself to sit down and take practice tests, and study. Good luck!

ok, yeah i'm a junior, and my psats sucked, and i keep getting random emails from "u of montana" and "temple", etc...i feel like such a dumb*** because I know i'm smart and i'm not going to a state college, but i screwed up my psats and i don't want these small schools to keep sending me stuff... i don't want you!!! lol :)

170 as a freshman is the kind of kids these schools are looking for, I'm sure you'll improve in the next 2 years. Don't think you messed them up, you did very well. :)

As for the mail/emails they are finally starting to stop..and I'm a second semester senior. lol. It got so bad at one point after I took the psats, I stuck them all in a bag for about a month and then poured them out and made a map of the US on my living room floor and had filled most of it up in piles and piles lol
