I just got offered financial aid for a school I am applying to as a transfer student. I was offered a Pell and SEOG grant, but not a SMART grant. I'm surprised because I am transferring in as a junior and am a computer science major. Do I have to apply directly for a smart grant or should it just automatically be considered with everything else?

Don’t know about your school, but according to D’s fin aid office (U of Md), they identify the recipients of the SMART grants starting in July. She’ll be a junior (but has always been there). The understanding that I’ve had is that they get all the federal grants that are based on EFG, etc. (i.e. relatively automatic based on your numbers). Then they have to go back and see which Pell recipients fall into the majors that qualify for SMART, and meet the 3.0 gpa (and other) requirements.
There’s no separate application process for SMART.

I’d recommend a quick email to your finaid office, asking when SMART grant recipients will be identified and notified.
