I always had a habit of reading the news daily in high school. You know, nytimes, latimes, new yorker. But you know, in college (especially if you're an engineering major), you never have much time to do anything else but study. Do you keep up with the news in college? Is it worth it?

Lol, trust me, you will be doing a lot of other things besides studying.

So yes, you will have PLENTY of free time to read the news every day if you so choose.

Yes, of course. You will have enough time after doing homeworks to read the news, so don’t worry.

I probably stay as up to date when I’m at school as when I’m not, but one nice thing is that Tufts provides us with free paper copies of The New York Times. That allows me to keep more up to date with things that I might shy away from when I read at home.

Not sure if other schools do this, but mine actually had newspaper stands with the NYTimes and WashPost in major classroom buildings, and they were free if you swiped your student ID

^ WashU provides us with free copies of most major newspapers also (LA Times, NY Times, etc.).

If you have a smartphone, you could download an app that pushes news to your phone and just check your phone when you have free time.

Of course you’ll have time to do things other than studying - otherwise everyone would burn out. Also, it’s silly to assume things just because you’re pre-engineering. I doubt you’ll be taking truly difficult classes in the first year.

NO major requires 24/7 studying. And actually, taking a break from studying now and then helps you focus later as well as not burn out. With most news outlets offering apps for smartphones and having more content online, it will be easy for you to bring up one such site while you’re waiting in line, or for a class to starts, or at dinner, etc. In addition to the major national outlets you’ll probably enjoy reading your hometown “paper” to keep up with what’s going on there. My D often brought up local happenings in our conversations.

Like others have said- there will always be time to do other things in college. On campus, I use to check CNN and some local sites a few times a day to keep up on news. Now that I’m off campus, I often have the news playing in the background as background noise and I perk up when I hear something important.

Yeah it’s pretty easy to keep up with the news in college. I figure you’ll be spending a lot of time on the Internet (as every college student does pretty much) so you can easily read articles online. I read a bunch of articles on Yahoo and Washington Post and other websites. I also downloaded the CNN and Mercury News apps which I use quite a lot.

My school provides free copies of the NYT, our local paper and our university’s paper. Whenever I have a few free minutes, i either pick one of those up or check on a news website. It’s really not too tough to stay up on the news.

I will generally just read the news on my phone from time to time, when I’m waiting for a bus, when I’m bored in a class, whatever. I do think it’s important to keep up with it though, being in college can be like living in a bubble sometimes and it’s good to remember that other things are going on in the world, lol.

I watch an hour or two of CNN a day (usually in the background if nothing major is happening on it).

I have the LA Times app on my phone, and I always scan through the articles before going to bed and after waking up in the morning.

I follow CNN and the Washington Post on twitter and I open the WaPo site multiple times a day. I’m also active on a politics and current events forum so I read a lot of stuff through that as well.

I read my school’s paper on a daily basis which keeps me informed about local things and stuff going on around the school.

And I usually read my hometown newspaper every so often.

I also tend to read the “Trending Now” articles on Facebook and the articles of interest on my Android.

But you WILL have time to read the news if that’s what you want to do. There is downtime, sometimes more than others, but you aren’t studying 24/7.

The Daily Beast, a news website, has what they call a “Cheat Sheet” which includes a synopsis of the main current events and links to news sites with more information. I find it helpful when I’m busy because I can spend just a few minutes on it before class or during a study break and have some idea of what’s going on.

I’m still going to, definitely. I think being well-informed is an extremely important quality.

Also as a Political Science major (or minor, I don’t know right now), it will probably be important for class to do so.

I never really kept up with the news in college, unless it was university news. However, from time to time, I would catch the local news early in the morning, but mainly for weather and whatnot.

i try to watch/read some news everyday
