i dont really understand why a person would need to buy a bag just for a laptop. i mean, i understand that it needs to be protected, but how is it any different from putting the laptop in a roomy bag and just being careful with it?

oh, and does anyone have recommendations for good laptop bags while we're on this topic?

i liked this 1:

I never really saw a lot of people with laptops in class...campus bookstores sell laptop covers for like $15 that you just put your laptop in and then throw (well not THROW, exactly ;) ) in your backpack

Yea I am confused about if people carry around backpacks in college for all of their books or if they just get a shoulder bag....or if they need a binder, even.

I bought a North Face laptop backpack for around $50. I already have a padded laptop sleeve, but the best thing about a bag made specifically for laptops is that the laptop compartment is elevated from the bottom of the bag, which absorbs the shock when you set your bag down/drop it.

My widescreen laptop fits inside my jansport backpack with two books.

Might not work for everyone (my classes have considerable time between) but you don't NEED a pc specific bag. As long as you don't throw your backpack around, you'll be fine.

how popular are canvas/leather messenger bags in college? would you recommend those for carrying laptops

I only have a laptop bag because it came with the laptop, but I never use it except when I'm going home or something. Most people with laptops just stick them in their bookbag, but most people don't even carry them around to begin with. I don't even use my bookbag, I just have a largeish shoulder back that I stick a notebook or two and some pens in and carry around. I see a lot of guys who skip the bag altogether and just carry around a notebook.

"how popular are canvas/leather messenger bags in college? would you recommend those for carrying laptops"

Very popular with the professors and grad students. Not so much with undergrads, mostly because of the difficulty riding a bicycle, razor, ect. with one.

"Most people with laptops just stick them in their bookbag, but most people don't even carry them around to begin with."

Maybe it depends on the school but, here at Berkeley, tons of people bring laptops to class. Most people can type faster than they can take notes. Plus you have the added advantage of recording the lecture if your PC has a mic.

Electronics can be a godsend, I remember freshman year when I used my Camera-phone to take pictures of the slides in bio.

Just buy a laptop sleeve and put it in your bag.

Like this what that I have, but it's probably only for macbooks.

i just put my laptop in my backpack or messenger bag...depends on how much other stuff i have with me at the time

Be forewarned of theft. If you carry around a laptop bag, it signals to everyone else what's inside it. If crime is a problem in your area, I recommend just carrying it around in a backpack.

I'm probably just gonna get a padded laptop sleeve and put it in me backpack.

I love my LL Bean backpack goes starry eyed

I have a case for my laptop that's just like a neoprene sleeve, so i put it in that and then just stick it in my tote bag with the rest of my stuff and it's been fine like that.
