Do you need a CSS on file to be eligible for merit scholarships?

do you need a css on file to be eligible for merit scholarships at Fordham?

Call them and ask them. I dont think so but I may be incorrect on that.

CSS is for financial aid, not merit scholarships. Fordham has some great merit scholarships but you have to be above 2100 SAT I believe, and have a superior gpa and very high class rank. It helps if they know your school.

Good luck.

I called and they said it needed to be filed even if there was no way you were eligible for a need based scholarship.

Okay, I learned something. But perhaps they misunderstood your question. Because Merit Aid at Fordham has NOTHING to do with financial aid. Its scholarship based and based entirely on your SAT and High School record and recommendations.

I would send an email to Enroll@fordham.edu and pose the question this way:

I dont need financial aid but I am interested in merit scholarships at Fordham. Do I need to file the CSS form to receive a merit scholarship alone?

See if that gets a different answer. I would be curious. I dont work for them or set their policies. But I know kids there with substantial scholarships who dont need financial aid.

You did NOT have to file anything for merit award consideration. The notification came with the acceptance.

!!! I have the same question...I applied EA to Fordham, but had no idea about the CSS profile, and so did not file one. My SAT score is 2360, with a 4.0 GPA and 2/140 ranking...so I think I apply for some scholarship. If I do not file, will I still be notified of any scholarships with my EA acceptance letter? Scholarship is a BIG consideration for me, and so it is pertinent that I know ASAP where I can receive some merit assistance. Does any one know??

HOWEVER, the paperwork still needds to be in

My D got a merit scholahip, and they kept asking for the paperwork

As well, even though we don't quailify for any aid, if she wants to work, at the radio station for instance, she needs the paperwork...why who knows

That is correct....they notify you automatically for merit scholarships when you are accepted, and there is NO NEED TO APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP SPECIFICALLY. If however they ask for paperwork after the fact, that is obviously for some sort of statistical reference or some sort of regulation. If you have a 4.0 UW and a 2360 SAT, believe me, you will be offered a scholarship. And I hope you come to Fordham.

There is someone at Fordham this year from the midwest who scored a perfect 2400, had a perfect 4.0/5.0 gpa and who turned down numerous scholarships elsewhere including Georgetown to attend Fordham. Why? This person wanted to be in New York and wanted a Jesuit University and other reasons. I hear this person is happier than a soaring eagle in the Grand Canyon and has been elected the President of the dorm.

Best of luck to you and I hope you come to Fordham! What a GEM of a school!

Thank you so much for your advice, Swansong...I actually sat in some classes with one of my Fordham friends last Monday, and found the experience quite enjoyable. She has Dr. Matteson for Biology--I never saw an individual so excited about insects! It was so refreshing to see a professor that intrigued with his subject!

The website does state that a CSS profile and other paperwork is due by February 1st, and I am sure that I will have all neccesary documents filed by then. However, the EA deadline was cited as November 1st, and that was why I was concerned--it's only a few days away.

If you went to campus and sat in on some classes then you are obviously very smart and mature....that is exactly what you should be doing when looking at colleges! If you got the warm and fuzzy feeling when you were there, then that is likely going to be your gut feeling and best choice. School is so much more than raw SAT scores and GPA's. There is a campus culture, a student body personality, a faculty personality.....all schools are different. There are very narrow nuancese between schools on these issues. And its not the same for every applicant. What may turn you on may not turn someone else on and vice versa.

I hope you get what you are looking for in Fordham and that you come to Fordham. And if not, then I wish the very best to you in your continued studies.

Best wishes.

I just talked to the office at Fordham about this question and she said every student MUST submit the CSS profile and FAFSA to be considered for merit aid. I explained that there is no way that we will qualify for need based aid and she said that it is Fordham’s policy that every student must submit these in order to be considered for any aid, merit or need.

Seems like a crazy system to me and now we have to pay more application fees!

We did the preliminary FAFSA, over the phone, with the company Fordham recommends. We have received 2 emails telling us our students’ merit estimates will come with their formal acceptance in December. We do not need to file the CSS; we only need to finalize the FAFSA after January 1. If you look at last year’s acceptance thread, as well as this year’s thread with a question about merit aid, you will see our experience is consistent with that of others.

When did you complete your application? Have you received an email suggesting you use the contracted company to complete the preliminary FAFSA?

My daughter was accepted at Fordham last year. She did NOT file any financial forms and still received a $10,000 Dean’s Scholarship from Fordham.

Just to clarify because there seems to be mixed responses here, do we actually need to file the financial forms prior to getting our acceptance? I know Fordham and other schools sometimes include merit scholarship notification in the acceptance letters but I am not sure if those people had already filled out financial forms.

We did file a FAFSA and the CSS Profile prior to notification of acceptance. On the special portal that you check after Fordham received your application it will have check marks next to things they have received. There are deadlines and I THINK the one for the CSS for the current academic year was around 2/15, I THINK (I was just happy to be done with it).

Just keep handy your end-of-year last pay stub and bank statements/investment statement. Have on hand last years tax return for reference.

The CSS, in case you are wondering, delves a bit deeper than the FAFSA. It asks if you have received scholarships for your child’s HS. Fordham has a supplement (they did when submitted it back in February) and it asked for: Make/Model/year or parents primary vehicle; same for secondary vehicle; own more than 2, provide that info also. Plus consumer and installment debt owed by parents.

We applied regular decision and we were notified of acceptance along with merit and financial aid at the end of March.
