Do you need graphing calculator for AP calculus ab?

I'm taking it this year, and if I do my mom is going to freak out once she finds out she needs to buysna 140 dollar calculator

yes, you will defintely need one

Of course you need one! You probably should have already have one from your previous math classes, I have needed one since I was in pre-algebra.

Hell Ya!
10char

Alyssa, there’s no question. You really do need one.

Can you get one on eBay or something?

Yes.
My school makes you have a graphing calculator when i went into alegbra1 D:

my school lets us rent them out for the year if we cant (or dont) buy one

I’ll have to buy one then. Isn’t there a certain one you cant use on act or SAT? Which one do you guys recommend. And no just a general scientific calculator has gotten me through all my math courses so far. They never told me to get one. This is the first year they are running AP at my high school, so I have a feeling a lot of kidsnin my class are not going to buy the calculator. They are prob going to borrow other peoples during class. I’m going to buy one though

Maybe a better way to answer your question is, if you don’t need a graphing calculator, your AP Calculus class is being taught very badly.

I mean, it is certainly possible to learn calculus without a graphing calculator. It’s how we did things back in the '80s, when our classes met in caves. But the AP exam will assume that you have a graphing calculator and you know how to use it.

Oh…come to think of it, learning how to use it while you’re also learning calculus may be a bit of a challenge.

Do the calc teachers usually teach you how to use one. I really hope so

$140? A TI-83, which is perfectly sufficient, is about $100, maybe even less with an in-store sale or something.

I bought the TI-89 titanium for precalc. It is a really good calculator, but it is kind of pricey. You could probably find it for less on ebay

True, a TI-83 will be enough. And they will go on sale in another week or two.

Alyssa, I don’t know what to tell you about the teachers teaching you to use it. I did teach my students to use their graphing calculators. In algebra class. And it took a lot of time when I wanted to be teaching algebra. I’ve never taught in a school where students didn’t already know their way around the calculator by the time they were in calculus. At least, not since the mid-1990s.

They should teach you. But it will take time away from calculus.

You can probably find a TI83 in your area on Craigslist for like $25…
