do you notice that as you grow older

you become better at discerning song lyrics?

seriously this is like the 100th time i've heard the YMCA song and only now have i realized it's about rehabilitation

and it's kind of disturbing actually

[quote]
Young man, there's no need to feel down.
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground.
I said, young man, 'cause you're in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy.

Young man, there's a place you can go.
I said, young man, when you're short on your dough.
You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.

They have everything that you need to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys ...

Haha, it’s not just about rehab. YMCA at the time was a place that men could go when they were down on their luck, not necessarily addicted to anything.

haha. It’s so unnerving when you realize these things.

The only one I can think of right now is Thanks for the Memories by Fall Out Boy. Somehow I’ve failed to hear the words “one night stand” repeated throughout the song for all these years…Must be going deaf…

and now you have to pay to join

Wow, that’s news to me…

oh, wow. never really looked at the lyrics like that before.

yea it used to be nostalgic until i actually listened to it :D

that’s how a lot of songs are

haha. i haven’t looked at that recently. never saw the meaning! and there was another song on the radio that i just understood the meaning of… forget what it was though.

No. I can almost never discern lyrics by listening to songs. Seriously, it’s almost as if the artists are singing a different language. o.o

haha. Yea. Sometimes when I listen to songs, I’m vaguely aware that they’re in English, but I just can’t make the words out.

I just remembered a few songs that I’ve misunderstood/never understood.

Kristy, Are You Doing Okay by The Offspring. I just liked the tune the first few times I heard it…But once I really listened to it I realized that it was about a sexual assault.

You’re Gonna Go Far Kid by The Offspring…I didn’t realize that they dropped the F bomb in the chorus until someone pointed it out to me a month later…

Superman by Five for Fighting. The first two times I heard it on the radio I thought it was saying, “I’m only a man with a silly red sheep”…

I didn’t understand why people cared about If U Seek Amy until someone pointed it out to me.

hahaha, same^

I listen to the lyrics. Btw, Thanks for the Memories by Fall Out Boy is such s dirty song, I’m surprised you didn’t pick up, ‘In hotel rooms collecting page six lovers. Get me out of my mind. Get you out of those clothes.’

Okay okay. I’m deaf. What’s your point? haha
I was only an innocent little seventh grader when I first heard that song :] I guess my mind just naturally tuned out everything? I’m listening to it right now actually, and I’m horrified at my own ignorance. haha.

lolol it’s okay.

And I meant such a*

I can discern Panic at the Disco’s or Avenged Sevenfold’s lyrics now!

I hate when I can’t figure out what some singers are saying. Sometimes it’s worth it to look up the lyrics because it makes a song so much better. I love a song called 'A cautionary song" by the decemberists but I never knew what they were saying until I looked up the lyrics. A song about a poor mother whoring herself out for her kid, oh my.

All the music I listen to is very lyrical and plot driven so it’s usually very difficult not to understand a little bit of what’s going on. One song that really sticks out in my mind though is “Carry Me Ohio” by Sun Kil Moon. At first I liked it because the tones of his voice and the instruments were beautifully mournful and melancholic then I started to pick up lyrics which hinted at some sad vignettes describing the remains of rust-belt ohio and then finally I started to pick out the full meaning of the song which was a story of sublime sadness.

Also @sarmango: I totally adore the Decemberists, and you’re definitely right. Knowing the lyrics to their songs is 90% of the enjoyment. I had to look up some of the lyrics to “When the War Came” and was blown away by how perfectly their allusions were weaved into their lyrics.

I agree with the Kristy, Are You Doing OK. It was a feel good dancey song for me until I realized it was about sexual assault. Then I was like- crap, I’m feeling good about others’ misery. :(

I can’t think of a song off the top of my head but I didn’t get any of the jokes in Clueless until after I got older.
