Do You REALLY Care...

About the nonprofit you started
About the sports you play
About the children you help (etc)

Or is it for college

-dun dun dun-

Yeeesss. Definitely, especially about sports. But ehhh the tutoring kids, I don’t care for nearly as much, but it’s not solely for college. The volunteering program that I’m gonna do in Africa this summer, though, has absolutely nothing to do with college. I love kids, and I don’t think any child deserves to live like that. So yes, I really really care about that

I care about most of the stuff I do, mainly tutoring ELL kids at my school; it’s really fulfilling and is helping me prepare for teaching in the peace corps. The one thing I’m doing for college is staying on this council in my town that supports the arts; it sounded really fun at first which is why I signed up, but they never ask for the high schoolers’ opinions so I don’t do much, but I stick with it because it will look good to colleges. Luckily, though, I’m able to say that the council is the only thing I’m doing purely for college.
@rrcjm: where in Africa? what kind of program are you doing?

Interestingly enough, I’ve never done anything for the resume. As it turns out, everything I’ve done has been perfect for a resume. Just a coincidence. So yes, I do care.

@swsd: It’s through this program called Bold Earth. The specific program within that that I’m doing is called Epic Africa. You travel from Mozambique to South Africa, and do several community service programs. But other than that you also get to scuba dive, surf, snorkel, all the good stuff. Its the type of thing I’ve wanted to do for as long as I can remember.

I don’t do anything that I can’t put on my resume.

^ That just made me really sad.

^^^that sounds awesome! i’d love to do those international community service trips; i can’t really do it right now b/c i haven’t been able to work out finances, but i’m really hoping to do some work in north africa or the middle east in college.

and i second ladyjacket, minnesotaguy it’s very sad that you can’t do anything just because it’s fun. life should not just be about getting to the next step, it should be about living.

Yef I duz. The reason I sign up for the activities I do is FOR me and the resume padding is a bonus. I’m an overachiever at heart so I really do like to do the best at everything.

^^Ah I’m sorry. D: I’m super excited. And yeesss. Same. I’d also love to go to South America and I’m definitely hoping to study abroad during college as well as international community service.

Why would I mentor and tutor over 60 middle school robotics teams if I didn’t enjoy it?

Why wouldn’t I be an active member in the STEM community in my county?
Why wouldn’t I join robotics to better myself, and increase the name?

A lot if just for the colleges. I care about some of tthe stuff, but a lot of the reason is to get to a good college. The real question it, what will you do in college?

I would say that I care about most of the stuff, because I’m into volunteering and I do quite a bit of it, so it’s sort of coincidental that I can put that on my applications. There are certain things though (like AP classes) that I’m just doing for college, and I don’t give a **** about it at the end of the day. I care a lot about the activities that I also want to continue in college, like bowling and newspaper journalism.
