Do you recommend Nova Southeastern University?

Hi guys,

I plan to apply for a PhD degree in information Systems in Nova Southeastern Univ. by distance learning. This requires 1 week attendance every semester.

I tried to find an official ranking that shows NSU ranking and finally I found that according to Washington Monthly NSU is ranked 157th while US News does not rank NSU.

How is NSU reputation in the US?

Thanks
Nova

Says USNews...

National Universities, 4th Tier

That alone tells me there's something wrong. I do know their law school is also really, really bad. But, "distance learning" in general...idk...

Thanks for your reply

what does that mean 4th tier?

My mom teaches there. It's not a good school. Some graduate students there cannot add fractions.

come on guys, you disappointed me!!!

Is it so bad?

I am from the middle east and this is the only way to get PhD

NSU is still accredited school and being 157th as per Washington Monthly is not a bad rank.

Nova serves a very useful purpose for those who need a doctorate for job advancement and/or pay increase. One recently minted doctoral degree holder from Nova doesn't seem to be able to get away from saying freshmans when referring to freshmen. It makes one wonder. This may be an unfair anecdotal assessment, however.

FSU has an Information Systems graduate program rated #10 nationally by USNews. Why not go there? You'd get more bang for your buck.

Florida State also has the #1 rated Library and Information Studies Specialties: Services for Children and Youth. This may be useful, too.

I suspect it might be a bit more work, though...

Dear Parent

Does FSU offer a PhD degree through distance learning?

As I said I am from the middle east and I can not arrange to attend more than a week per semester...

Thanks

Again guys

I need to decide whether to go for NSU or not...

NOVA
Is this another possibility - would be a better choice if so..............
http://www.ecu.edu/gradschool/programs.cfm?type=deavailable&value=1

Nova has a Tier 4 law school, that is their claim to fame. I would strongly consider other options for a Doctorate from Nova though.

Florida State University College of Information

It appears that some graduate degrees (an MS) may be available online.

There is also the College of Business Management Information Systems This College also has online elements.

You'll ned to clarify what you mean by 'Information Systems' since this term may be applied to several different areas.

From Your replies it looks that Nova Southeastern has a bad reputation!!! is that true?

I have already been admitted to the school and supposed to start my PhD in January.

My Major is Information Systems which is similar to Computer Science, specifically in information security.

Can any one help by telling me why Nova NSU is so bad?

I am really dipressed...

Nova is "bad" insofar as low ranked schools such as this one that sponsor online degrees most significant claim is that of taking your money.

James Madison and others have well thought of on-line degrees in computer science. Look into them.

Actually MAM alot of schools - and professions as well - with on-line programs are not touting them as just on-line degrees - they are actually degrees by distance learning - which actually is different for masters/phd programs and continuing education programs. Many undergrad programs also have many classes on-line now - legitimately. Are the programs at JMU at the level that the OP is seeking?? may be a good optin to check out at the very least.

NOVA my question would be to you - have you researched other programs similar to NSU?? or is this the only one you have found?? Another thing to consider is that NSU is not one of the upper cut level schools in this country - and therefore - you may not get very much positive feedback from this site. That said - since you are from another country - the degree from NSU may serve your purposes well. I think tho - that you need at least one other program to compare it to - have you done this??

Thanks a lot to all those participated in this thread.

I hope to read more about it...

Thanks

Nova Southeastern is not a wise choice. It is definitely not a school for anyone with some academic ambition. I suggest you look for another institution, and not waste your money.

It depends on what you want, real learning or diploma, risk or safety, hard work or smooth sailing. NOVA certainly serve its purpose by offer people chance of aquiring advanced degree otherwise would be out of their reach.

Nova,

You may want to look at schools listed in this website
http://ww2.cs.fsu.edu/%7Epeeler/topschools.html

It ranks the top distance learning graduate schools for CS (or similar) degrees. Good luck!

THere's an attorney in our town who's incredibly successful. I looked him up online and it said he went to NovaSoutheastern Law School. I was surprised to say the least!
