I am an accepted student and I am between this and another school, UMass. The lack of a college atmosphere is a turn off. The way the school is set up is reminds me of my high school with the specific majors and what not. The only thing that keeps bringing me back to Emerson is the the location and internships. I do not want to regret making a wrong decision.

What will you major in? My D is a freshman at Emerson. Is it UMass. Amherst? My sister graduated from UMass. - Amherst. My D loves Emerson I do not think you will miss out on college atmosphere I know for a fact my D has not.

I want to double in communications and journalism and the location is great for that. Also the other college I am referring to is UMass Amherst. Also, UMass Amherst is a better fit for me financially speaking.

Emerson is stronger in communications and journalism. But if you are going to have trouble with the financial aspect then you might have to choose UMass. Did Emerson offer you any aid? My D got a $23,000.00 grant. Also if you end up going to UMass you got to be careful with the big party atmosphere there you have to know when to stay away or you might see your gpa go way down. I went to a prep near Amherst and used to visit on weekends.

Yes they did provide me with aid. But they gave me around 43,000 in total for financial aid. But 9,500 of it is in federal loans and 6,000 of it would be unsubsidized and I would need around 4,000 out of pocket just to attend. Another problem is that since I do not have any credit, my interest rates would sky rocket. I am so torn because I know that even though UMass is more affordable, Emerson would have amazing internships and opportunities. And thank you for your warning at UMass, if I go, I will make show to demonstrate self-control! But each school has their pros and cons, but I just don’t want to make the wrong decision!

Are you from Mass? How much will it COA will be for you at UMass. If you have health insurance under your parents or on your own you can opt out of their insurance policy and that is $900 of the cost. Also for the extra $4,000.00 you can look at The Direct loan plus from the Fed. Gov. Dept of Education like 7.75% interest or so and you can take up to the $4,000.00 or less. Are your parents willing to help? If it is impossible financially then you would have to settle for UMass. If you are in Mass. the $47,000.00 takes into account traveling costs so you can have more savings there. Do not feel anxiety by the decision (yeah right like i do not have to make the desicion lol!) you can make the best out of any college if you really put your effort towards school and making new and interesting friends.

Yes I am from Massachusetts. But I am considered independent so my family would not be able to take the out the Direct Plus Loans. The problem is that I can attend Emerson, but only if I take out the private loans. Would the Emerson education be worth it in the end with the strong alumni and internships? In your opinion, which school would you go to? Unfortunately! I am stressing out to the max! I think of what is now and what can happen at both colleges! And you are right, you can make any college your college. I just want to thank you for taking out time in your day reply!

As an independent you can take a Direct Plus Loan for students. I do not know how it works so you would have to go to the fafsa site. That would lead to $50,000 to $55,000 in loans for the 4 yrs. It is said as a rule of thumb you should not go into higher debt than what you could make on your 1st year of work. Do not know a lot about your field so you will have to look up what the prospects are. Good Luck! Glad to be of help and if you have any other questions I’ll try answer them.

You should take a look at the link here which shows Emerson post graduate survey. It shows what Emerson graduates are doing one year after graduation. It is somewhat alarming and I already worry about my S who will be Emerson class of 2015.

[Careers & Internships | Emerson College](Graduate & Undergraduate Programs, Emerson College)

That is the nature of the professions taught at Emerson and that our children have selected. I like too look at it on a more positive note, more than half 56% knew what they were doing after graduating. But the market for this careers is and always will be tough no doubt.

I just took a look at the stats and I can’t say that I am not disappointed, but I am. I want to go to a college that would provide me the best education, but one that will not put me in debt. It seems as though the safest major is marketing. However, I agree with NewsDrms, by attending this college I am aware that it is extremely difficult to find employment after. And I went on the FAFSA and the Direct Plus loans are only for parents ): I’m still undecided about what I want to do.

What did you decide?
