I have our piano listed on Craigslist. Already had a scammer wanting to buy it full price, send the cashiers check. Something smelled fishy and DH looked into it and sure enough that’s a typical scam.
I’d like to try FB, as I think things might sell faster on it, but it makes me nervous. At least Craigslist, you can have back and forth conversation and you’re anonymous until you decide not to be. On FB, they know who you are. Easy to figure out where you live. I’m not sure what to do.
I have sold a couple things on FB Marketplace. I have bought a couple things too. I personally feel much more comfortable with FB than Craigslist. MUCH.
It’s a piano - aren’t they going to end up knowing where you live anyway? You can edit your FB name to not be your full name - like “Conmama Marie” instead of “Conmama LastName”. Change it back after you sell the piano.
(would it be more worthwhile to sell to a music store or piano store??? )
Depending on the kind of piano (yours may be special and worthy!) people often can’t give them away on our neighborhood FB page.
I have just sold things…and gotten things…by posting a picture on my own Facebook page. That goes to friends…who can share with their friends. No FB Marketplace. It hasn’t ever been needed.
For a piano, I would contact a local place that sells pianos. Unless it’s a vintage piano, you can’t give a piano away here. … …good luck.
Good topic for me right now. DH needs to sell something that would need to be picked up at our home- not shipped- and I am not wanting to use Craigslist because of all the scammers and the disaster stories. He’s going to try Next Door first, I think. I know in one of our moves (and this was over 10 years ago) I got nothing but scammers from Craigslist- the ones who were going to send you a huge money order and you were to wire back the difference in funds.
After being turned down by Pianos for Education & Beethoven Foundation (beautiful piano, but “too old”), I asked my church if they knew of anyone who needed a piano. As it turned out, my minister did! He even hired movers to get it.
I have used Marketplace several times with no problems. I would love to get rid of our baby grand. DH says it will go with the house when we move eventually I am thinking of sledgehammering it and having a bonfire
We sold two wingback chair on Sunday via Facebook Marketplace. We sold a car on craigslist this summer. We have also sold furniture on OfferUp. All can work well.
I have bought and sold on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, Amazon, Ebay, etc. I’ve never had an issue, even when selling items that require pickup at the house. I do take some precautions though - I ask for their cell phone number and I “chat” a few times with them before giving them my address (even on FB.) I rarely let them inside the house - most things can be brought to the driveway or garage. And I always make sure there are others here when they come, ideally young men and dogs.
I sold my old iPhone on the Next Door website and limited the notice to those people on the site from my town. The buyer came to the house and picked up the phone and paid cash. He brought his two kids with him so it felt safe. We stayed on the deck outside.
I posted an item on FB marketplace back in March. A person contacted me out of the blue a few weeks ago. I had forgotten about it and was a bit suspicious. It turned out that she wanted a particular thing, sold by Crate and Barrel. She obviously did a search and my item came up. She drove an hour to get to my house for the item. I had my husband here when she arrived. It worked fine.
I like FB better than Craigslist. I try the local small town FB first, then add it to the regional area and/or Craigslist only if worth the dollar amount for the hassle. Usually it works fine. Often I receive a large number of requests asking for additional information that is already posted on the description., or they say they’ll come to pick it up, and never show up. So, the hassle factor has to be balanced with the dollar value.
My neighbor sells a lot of items for $5-$10 on the local FB page, and many sellers simply put the item on the porch, and the buyer leaves payment in mailboxes.
For costlier items posted on a more regional page, they often meet at the police station parking lot (if the item fits in a car).
Once I sold a piece of furniture, and I insisted cash only. Buyer kept requesting money order or cashiers check. I finally agreed ONLY if we met at the local bank, and check cleared before they left. Then we met outside my garage for pick up. Not sure if they were trying to scam, but it eventually worked, after more hassle than I hoped for.
Pianos here rarely sell. We gave ours to a local senior center & they were thrilled.
I have never used any of these (just given a lot of stuff away free on FB Buy Nothing).
But we have a few nice pieces of furniture we aren’t planning to move and would like to sell.
I have done it. H has done it. I ask for Venmo, H does cash. Never had an issue but also most people I have dealt with are from within our neighborhood.
My son and I have both sold multiple items on FB marketplace. When I started, we would meet at a public place. But now we always do porch pick up.
They let us know when they are coming, we set the item on the front porch, and tape an envelope for the money on the front door. I worried to try it, but we have not had one single issue, and it is soo easy and convenient.
