I noticed a lot of schools around me change it so that if you only miss 0-2 days, you don’t have to take finals. My school still makes us take finals no matter what. But do you have to take them?

WOW! That is weird! I've never heard of that and I would assume most people here have to take finals. I wouldn't be too happy about getting out of finals though, b/c you WILL have to do them in college, and I think they are weighted much more than in HS.

We don't take finals, we take quarterlies. Instead of a test that counts for 20% of your grade taken at the end of the year, we get a test every quarter about the information in the quarter, and each test counts for 5% of your final grade.

Some teachers make the quarter 4 test like a final though...

Wow reading this sounds so strange since in college my finals are usally 40% of the grade and right now for one of them it's 50% of the grade

yes I don't think teachers are doing anyone any favors by letting students out of final exams. In college they are a major part of your grade- so much so that my daughter who had a very difficult final although she had done quite well in the class, ended up flunking the class because of it and had to take a year off to retake the whole course.

We have to take finals at my school. Final & Midterm tests count for 1/7 of my grade for the year. In some of the classes, we don't have to take finals if you're ranked 1 or 2 for that teacher's course or if we earned a medal in a foreign language exam, we'd not have to take the final.

Alot of schools around here offer exemptions to students with excellent attendance and A's in the class....but my school doesn't and the finals are worth 25% of each semester (but thank god are not cumulative).

I didnt take finals my junior or senior year. Only in AP classes did we take them, and that was just for practice for the AP test. So the grade didn't matter. Freshman and sophomore years, we could only exempt a few though.

the last three days of school are reserved for finals. which means we get out at 12:30 each day. hehe...

some classes just give final projects. or nothing at all. this year i had two final projects (one of which we did in december) and three exams. seniors are exempt from the final exam in a class if they receive an A average for the entire year plus an A for the fourth marking period (or else everyone would slack off like crazy).

oh god my last seven days are for finals...but at least we get out at 10:30.

yes...but a lot of teachers, especially for AP courses will give a final project instead..I ended up taking only 3 finals (out of a possible 7) this year.
Seniors have in the past been exempt from finals if they receive an overall grade of A- or better in the course. But I believe they're getting rid of that starting with the class of '06. grrr...

Very few classes at my school have finals. Finals are given at the discretion of the teachers, and very few of them decide to have finals. When they do, the test is usually held on the last day of class; there is no special finals day/week/etc. We do have final projects sometimes, but most classes just end without any special activity.

My school's policy is give exemption from the final if you have missed no more than two class periods and have an A average in the class. Freshmen don't get any exemptions, sophomores get two, and juniors get as many as they are eligible to receive. Seniors also get as many exemptions as they qualify for, but they only have to hold an 85 average in the class.
