After the historically difficult admissions year for the HS class of 2009, can we expect to see a change for the class of 2010, 2011 and so forth? I've heard some say that by 2012 -2013, it should be back to "normal" - although I'm not sure what that means!

Just wondering if anyone had any insight? I actually had a 2009 HS graduate (they were constantly told how difficult/competitive their year was) and will have one graduating in 2012, so I was hoping the "road" would be just a bit less crowded from here on out.

So what’s “normal?” Like it was in 1960? In 1990? 2004?

College admissions will never get easy. The decline in numbers due to the passing population bulge will not be big enough to relieve much of the current pressure, especially at the highly-selective schools. I’m guessing that you might see in a few years something like Harvard getting “only” 27,000 applications for the 1650 slots in their freshman class instead of the current 29,000. Big Whoop. It’s still going to be tough. But it won’t get “back to” some previous normal - it will just be the new normal.

In the current economy, it is only gonna get tougher for HYPSM and the like due to their generous FA policy (no money for incomes below 60k, no tuition for incomes below 100k etc).

no. the world becomes more globalized and hyper-competitive every year. admit rates may rise, but so will the caliber and competitiveness of the applicants.
