Do you think I'll get into MIT?

I would be extremely grateful to anyone who takes the time to read this through! :)

I'm trying really hard to cut down colleges from my list. I only want to apply to MIT if my chances are realistic enough. If you don't think I have a realistic chance, be honest!!

This is my r

You sound like you have a good chance. But what I don’t get is how you have the time to do all this.

Thanks kemcab. I’m confused though… You don’t understand how I find the time to do what? I’m guessing either the things I listed in my r

I’d say you should definitely apply. Nobody can tell you that you’ll get in, or what your chances are, but you’ll never know unless you try. It seems like you had some challenges to overcome, but you’re doing great! Good luck with everything!

GPA: meh
SAT: 2080 is weak, but you can get that up ^.^
SAT II: pretty good, french 800 probably won’t be considered as you are a native speaker (my college councilor told me colleges won’t care even if I get 800 on chinese)
EC: don’t put stuff like “1 week” on your college app lol. Jut say you did it.

Overall, MIT might be concerned with your seeming lack of focus. What are you planning to major in anyway?

Thanks for the replies!
MeSsIaH: Well I’m not a native speaker. I started with French 1 as a freshman and finished French 4 AP during my Junior year. And I’m probably going to major in economics. Oh and thanks for the tip, I won’t put 1 week lol.

The French SAT doesn’t actually matter, because MIT only looks at 1 science and 1 math.

really? wow that’s a bummer, I thought those were just requirements. Oh well I better do amazing on Biology E in October. I’m self studying this summer, but I took Biology Honors as a freshman so that’s my foundation.

Thanks kemcab. I’m confused though… You don’t understand how I find the time to do what? I’m guessing either the things I listed in my r

Well, generally I didn’t do all of those things at once. Usually I would have about 3 or 4 of the above listed activities going on around the same period of time, so it wasn’t anything too impossible.

And ahhh that kid was a hassle at times. I’m not going to give too many details about my experiences with him because this is a public forum that anyone can read, for my essay… but he was definitely a hand-full haha. I haven’t kept contact with their family though, they moved and they didn’t leave a forwarding address which I found strange. That was back in 10th grade though so it’s been a while.

I think the essay idea about comparing his train to your desire to teach him better is cool
In my opinion, your chances are probably better than usual since you have an interesting life…just try to show that you’d be a good fit & contribute to MIT

That website you made is kinda weird, haha. Do you get a lot of orders?

Ahh so you think the website is weird, do you? Well I thought I did an alright job, it definitely took up a lot of time. I think the product is weirder than the site but I’m not married lol. As far as orders go, he gets an average amount; it provides him some extra pocket money which is fine.

I designed my own website, but it’s solely for personal use, haha. And still, you’ve been a lot busier than I’ve been, generally. Right now I’m volunteering at two hospitals- not really as to ‘cram’ in hours at the last minute, but because I have nothing better to do during the summer, as we’d usually travel instead.

The one thing that might stand out is tutoring the autistic child. To me, at least, it shows you have a great deal of patience because it’s something I could never do, even with a normal kid.

I think you will get into MIT. They’re crazy if they reject you and I’m sorry about what happened to your father.

Well if they reject me I wouldn’t really be surprised actually.
I mean, don’t I need more science awards etc? I look more like a good humanities applicant… well I am going to major in Economics or something similar.

Flyingllama, my advice to you is to consider strongly: why would you like to go to MIT? Do deep reflection on this question. And given there are many who want it badly, “MIT is a good school for math/science/engineering” definitely will not cut it. If you have a good answer to this question, I would guess MIT will take you very seriously.

MIT is a very tough school, and while you’re certainly a strong individual for having made such efforts given your background, they still will want significant evidence that you’ll be prepared * upon entry* to get through their program. What is shining about you in the math/science/engineering area? Commendable individuals may not necessarily be great fits for MIT, so be sure to sell yourself!

I think you have a chance. I don’t think of MIT as a school for math/sci/engineering so much as it is a school for those who have the knack for thinking innovatively and a drive to apply that special talent to changing the world for the better. If you don’t believe me read their admissions website very carefully. Of course, you need to be good at math and science, too. Sans big awards in those areas you should probably tried to write an application that shouts out Motivated! Creative! Determined!

I love your idea of writing an essay about teaching an autistic kid. I would write this essay for the “Tell us about something you’ve created” prompt if they still have it, because what you were doing was creating an educational program (it’s not like there’s a clear roadmap for how to teach these kids). Meanwhile he is creating a model railroad, which gave you inspiration. That could be a GREAT essay.

Of course, if they still ask about what circumstances you have overcome you have plenty to talk about in that essay, too.

Yes, actually geomom makes a good point, adding the right dimension to what I meant to say MIT is about. Being innovative and creative seem to be cherished qualities. Though, of course there are innovative and creative people in other places too, and I think a nice harmony between this theme and that of passion in math/science/engineering type subjects is what makes one a good candidate. I guess I gather my comments from MIT students and alumni who’re much more knowledgeable about this stuff than I, but may or may not have posted yet on this thread.

hmm ok, well I could definitely show MIT my creative/innovative side. trying to teach that autistic child was filled with constant problem solving, I could write about that, and connect to several other elements. I still think im shaky on my engineering/science ECs though

i definitely want to attend MIT because it seems like a place where people are trying to solve the biggest problems of our world. that really appeals to me, and i’ll have to find a way to demonstrate that in my application

AP Scores just received:
AP Psychology: 5
AP French: 5
AP US History: 4

I’m rather bummed about History!
