Do You Think I'll Regret My Decision

<p>My parents met at BYU and all four of my grandparents also went there, so I grew up expecting to go there as well. But I’m not. I worked really hard in high school and did very well (2340 SAT, NMS, etc.). I ended up applying early to an Ivy League school and was accepted. That was four months ago. Since then I’ve really been questioning my decision. There will be very few LDS kids where I’m going. Most dorms have communal bathrooms for both men and women. Greek life is important. In other words, the environment will be 180 degrees different from BYU’s. I didn’t really give much consideration to any of these things when I applied. I just wanted to get into the best school possible. </p>

<p>Do you think I’ll regret my decision? </p>

<p>Most students end up happy at their schools. You will most probably be one of those. Attitude is everything. As far as not having a lot of LDS students around, there are other ways to meet members than just having a classroom full of them. Is there a singles ward in the area? A nearby institute? If so, you’ll probably find you meet plenty of members. </p>

<p>The environment will be different, no doubt. People will not be living the same as the students at BYU. This can be a positive or a negative. Negative is obvious, but the positive is that you will be challenged. You will have to learn to stand up and live your beliefs by yourself, not as part of a group. This can really strengthen you if you approach it with the right attitude. </p>

<p>So where are you heading to school?</p>

<p>My child has the same question. She’s only a 9th grader now, but wondering about the future. Interested to see what people say on this. Good luck in school.</p>

<p>The important thing is that you get what you want out of the college. Obviously, BYU has a better environment standards-wise, but you can make the best out of any college if you have the right mindset.</p>

<p>I lived in a dorm and went to a state school. Hated every minute of it. Dorms are awful. Sex, drugs, drinking. Was so glad to finish year and go on my mission. Finished at a state school, but lived at home after my mission. Go to BYU for the Spirit. Education may be better at an Ivy league school, but you’ll be much happier at BYU.</p>

<p>I would give it a fair shot. If you find you are not happy, then apply to transfer in the spring.</p>

<p>Also, you applied early, so you really are obligated to attend where you have been accepted.</p>

<p>Don’t live life in regret. Accept the decision you made when you applied early, knowing that next year you can transfer. No biggie.</p>
