Do you think this is a good idea for a college essay?

I'm writing an essay for UIUC about an interest or experience. It has to show maturity and growth through past experiences, character development, cultural insight, community awareness.*** The most thing the university is interested in is Diversity and how I can add it to the campus***'

I'm thinking about writing how my childhood was a classic one in the USA untill i moved to the middle east (Jordan). I'll write about my struggle adapting with the language and the culture. Then I'll write about what I learned and about some of the hateful stereotypes and how I viewed them from a different perspective. I'm going to mention anti semitism. Then I'm gonna talk about my experience at the EuromedScola event (kind of like mun, at the European parliament) and how I met alot of people there and was introduced to many cultures. The main part being letting go of all prejudices and meeting with the Israelis for the first time. Then communicating with them and clearing misunderstood thoughts about each other. After that i try to break the barrier and promote understanding between my delegation and the Israelis. In the end I say how this experience changed my view of the world, and of the relations between people.

Thanks :)

Sounds very reasonable. Watch the tone, and try not to come across as preachy. Focus on your own journey, and not the sins of others.

Thanks, and yeah I’ll keep it mainly about my personal experience.

Sounds like an interesting and unique topic that fulfills the requirements if carried out correctly.

Good one, kid. Especially if you’re arab.
I actually wrote an analogous essay to that!
Be careful not to include too many stories, tho…they don’t really want to hear much about what happened in your childhood.
Use your 500 words wisely instead, and explain how that convention changed your perspectives/your mission in life.
You could show how middle easterns are hating on each other only out of ignorance, that maybe if everybody reached out to their neighbors, Arab-Israeli conflict would end. You could also say how the whole experience affected you, and what you plan on doing in order to “make this right”
Seriously, tho. You put that story in an essay, and you are guaranteed NOT to be forgotten in an applicant pool of thousands ;)

@Anarchisthuda thanks alot, you really excited me to write about it, and yes I am arab and will definitely take your advice  Thanks again!!!
