Do you think you will ever be rich?

If you are already rich, if you plan to inherit money from your rich parents, or if you plan to marry a rich guy, my question does not apply to you!

i don’t know if I’ll ever be rich, but I know i’ll always live comfortably or at least have plenty of money saved up, because i live pretty frugally and am kind of a minimalist when it comes to having stuff.

unless something really bad happens, like my kid is born really ill or something like that.

“rich” is a relative term anyway. some people consider rich to be making over $200k a year, others consider rich the top 5% of wealth.

i doubt my income will ever top 40K and tbh that’s pushing it

Rich? Probably not. Making enough to live comfortably with the kind of lifestyle I enjoy? Yeah, I think so.

this sounds interesting, tell us more

sociological statistics tells us that we are unlikely to deviate much from out parent’s class in society, which in turn predicts our income.

I don’t want to be rich. I don’t want to own much at all…

Most likely not, but if I do I could never get married…at least without a prenuptial.

Nope, I will always be dirt poor. But that’s okay with me.

Basically I want to live in a decent sized apartment/condo/home. I want to drive a decent car, but the nicest I’d go is like a BMW 5 series or something. Or a Corvette. I want an HDTV, a good computer, a good cell phone, good internet and TV service, and I want to be able to get a lot of food at organic stores. I also want to be able to eat out fairly often. Have a dog (dachshund). Eventually marry and have kids, and be able to raise them comfortably, send them to a good private school if the public school district sucks, and help pay for their college.

That doesn’t require me to be rich, thankfully. I just need to be smart about my finances and learn to not get things until I can afford them. If that means having to stick with a crappy TV for a few months while I save for a new one, so be it.

The only thing that’s dead certain on there though is the dog :P

^^ Sounds pretty rich to me. O.O

Rich? No. Very Comfortable? Yes.

I like simple things. I’m not into luxury. I’m cheap and love saving money. I could only see myself splurging on electronics, but I don’t need a big house or fancy car or expensive clothes and furniture. If there’s a Target, I’m set.

Rich is very subjective.

I’d like to be rich and if I continue down the path I’m going I’m sure I’ll remain with the same income or more. I don’t think I’d ever be a millionaire unless I stuck it good on investing or started a business that really skyrocketed.

@Twisted, to me rich means being able to buy a $200,000 car in cold hard cash. My goals will require me to be well-off, yes, but not rich. And I won’t have all those things overnight, but I will want to get them at some point. I figure that even with $3,000 in obligations a month (rent, car payments, insurance, utilities) that I’d still have $1,000 to spend each month. Easily done on a $48,000/yr salary, which is probably on the lower end of what I want to end up doing.

i think theres potential. not much though.

I’m not paying 200k for nothing…so let’s hope it’s a yes.

I don’t need to be absurdly rich to be happy, but I do need stability and freedom. I have fairly simple tastes, but there are a few things that are worth spending a lot of money on to me:

Computer (this is my own personal “splurger” – I like having an awesome computer)

Bed (you sleep there every night. You spend a third of your life asleep. You better damn well be comfortable!)

Occasionally clothing (fits better, looks better, lasts longer – cheaper in the long run if you take care of things)

Generally speaking, I think where I live has more impact on me than how much I make. I absolutely love city life. Having the ease of transport, the beauty of the buildings, the numerous restaurants and things to do… it’s enough to keep things fun. There’s also more opportunity to take transport to other cities – if I live in a place like Philly, for instance, it takes no time at all to go spend a weekend in New York. If I were making twice as much in a boring suburban community, I’d be extremely unhappy.

Do I need an absurdly expensive sports car? It’d be awesome, but I don’t think it would make me jump up with joy every morning I wake up. I love my computer though… it’s an absolute beast and I’m glad I got it. Spending a few grand on a really high-end desktop gives me a lot more pleasure than dumping tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars into a car would.

I’d also like to be able to travel – specifically, to China/Japan/Europe. I think to be able to do this frequently, I would need to be somewhat “rich,” since travel can be expensive, but I think it’s probably something I’d only be able to do on holiday/vacation breaks anyway. But if I were married, having dual incomes would make a lot of expenses easy to handle (such as rent/mortgage, food, utilities, etc) and so being able to afford travel would be much easier.

At the end of the day, simply having a decently comfortable, stable income is enough to keep me satisfied with life. As long as I can pay the bills, save a little, and have enough left over to occasionally see a movie or dine out or buy new clothes or take a small trip… I’ll be happy, especially if I’ve got an awesome girl to go with everything XD

Will I be rich? I don’t know – it isn’t an important goal to me. If it happens, then great. But my goal is happiness, not wealth.

I’d just like to be able to live in the same financial condition I was raised in.

Guess I cant answer your question then…

Eh, to me - making 100k a year is probably what I would consider rich. But at this moment I doubt I will ever make that much - mostly because I don’t care that much about money - especially not as much as some other money-hungry folks I know at university. It’s just not my personality to grovel and steal, and pander to innane corporate subcultures, and kissass, to try to get all the gold stars. If I care about work I will excel in it but I guess I’m not into ‘playing the game’ much.

It may happen if I strike out on my own entrepreneurial ventures and happen to get a bit of luck.

Plus, call me crazy but I don’t see that much of a point in tons of money. Sure, you wouldn’t have to work I guess. But frankly, beer and video games and fast food just don’t cost that much. Travel and vacations would be nice I suppose.

An expensive car is probably the last thing I would buy if I had tons of money. What’s the point? To be flashy, to show others you have status? What status? That you have lots of money? I just don’t think it’s too impressive. It’s kind of insecure and irritating, as if you were bragging. Or as if your expensive car defined you and represented the pinnacle of your life’s achievements. A hunk of steel that is mass-produced.

How would you compare to Napoleon? Or Einstein? Or Martin Luther King, Jr?

Um… yeah… I have a $200k sports car. I can afford it because I’m a corporate lawyer for the sixth largest paper company in the United States – yeah I sit in an office all day, shuffling papers and faxes and rubber-stamping documents – but mostly surfing the internet (googling important case questions) and using the bathroom while I run up the billable hours count on our clients, and uh… well my services are very important you see…

I think most men drive expensive sports cars because they think it’s the only way for them to get a hot chick. And, they may be right in the sense that an expensive car probably does help them get girls (though it is not the only way to attract women). My only thought is, “If a girl only wants to go out with me because of my car, do I want to go out with her?” Of course, many guys do not have the self-respect or self-esteem to answer no, as I most certainly would.

I plan on winning the mega-millions lotto 3 months after I graduate, so yes.

In all seriousness, I do plan on being rich. I want to ultimately end up in a HF, and those careers pay very well.

For all those of you who say I will never do it; I don’t want to end up in a HF to be rich, I want to end up in a HF because it is an industry that interests me, and the money will follow.

Also, cars are sexy. My father is an automechanic, and I love cars (rebuilt my first engine at 15years old). I don’t plan on buying the most expensive $200,000 sports car, but I might buy a couple $15,000-$30,000 cars (VW Bus, VW Ghia, and a porsche 911 for my father (his dream car)). There is an appeal behind 2000lbs of pure power. Twisted steel and sex appeal.
