Do you want to study in Germany?

Hi everyone,

as the community has been very helpful, I would like to return the favor.
I am an EE student at TU Darmstadt (Darmstadt University of Technology), which has an exchange program with UIUC.
I am aware that Darmstadt is not well known internationally, but it is one of the top universities in Germany when it comes to engineering and has a great atmosphere.

So, if you have any questions about the city, university or anything else, feel free to ask :)

I went to TU Darmstadt under the international research experience program and worked at Institut EMK (part of ETiT) from September to December 2009. For anyone considering it, it’s well worth it. I broke even in terms of cost because I got a 650 Euro/month stipend and I got 9 hours of credit at UIUC while paying lowest range tuition. Also, you can get by perfectly well in this part of Germany with no German at all. Very nice city overall.

could you give an idea of tuition costs and cost of living?and is all the teaching conducted in english?thank you.

How is the tuition like?and cost of living?please tell me more.So far I am considering jacobs university bremen so any info on german universities is appreciated.I am concerned about language barrier though.thank you.

Unfortunately, most of the basic undergraduate classes are in German. Nevertheless, there are a lot of classes in English, especially at graduate level. It is possible to get through classes with just basic German skills, as there are always some English book recommendations and the teaching assistants are used to people not speaking German as the university attracts a lot of foreign students.
As far as I know, you don’t have to pay for any tuition despite semester fees (roughly 250€ for each semester). Living expenses are high for German standarts, Expect to pay roughly 600€ for living each month, including room and food.

Hey,
I’m glad to have found someone who got accepted into the IREP program too. I’m a 4th year senior and just got accepted into the Fall 2011 program. I’ve been wanting to go abroad (without spending all my money) for a while now. Unfortunately, having no idea what Darmstadt is like, I’m getting cold feet. I’m concerned about having a fun experience, the people, not knowing anyone, and how to have an exciting lifestyle. Could you describe your personal experience? By the way, I come from UC Berkeley, what school were you from?

Ironically, I am a german student living in munich, but I will attend U of I starting next year  not as an exchange but full-time, since I wrtoe my Abitur last year here, and I have been doing my civil service so I am going to be 20 starting freshmen year… We’ll see , I’m excited … :)Don’t think I’ll need to come back here, but for you people who have never been: if you have the chance come in over 'cause it’s quite nice  use your chances !!!
