Do you work as hard as an Exeter student?

The gist of the recent Exeter comments is that students there work harder, sleep less, and have less fun than they would prefer. So, is Exeter unique in that regard? Are students at PA, SPS, DA, L'ville, Hotchkiss, Groton, Choate, MX etc relaxing while the Exeter kids toil? Feel free to provide some perspective!

I average 6 hours of HW/night, plus HW on weekends & I
m a 3 season athlete. I maintain a 4.0 GPA. if I slacked off, I
d have a 3.0. I think it depends on the student, not the school.

I think if you do decide to go to Exeter, then you should be ready for hard work. This goes for all HADES, a lot of work is involved and a lot of reward is there too.

@Maddog-What Grade are You in and what Grade are You applying to?

I heard that Andover is more fun

When I visited all the schools, I felt the strongest intellectual atmosphere was at Exeter.

So yes, I’m guessing they work very hard. On academics.

I dont think kids at other schools are laying back relaxing, it really depends on the student not the school.

If you are not 4.0 typically, then you will work where ever you go. Just because someone spends 6 hours on homework doesnt mean someone else couldnt do it in 3 hours–student dependent.

When my d was in public school, she had tons more work—but it was “busy” work, no depth. At bs she typically works 3 hours per day, and maintains an A average. Her work is much more meaningful and fulfilling.

Remember, fun is relative, and most high school students say at some time, “im bored and not having fun”–teen-age angst.

FWIW, my tour guide at Andover said that he had about four hours of homework per night (and he was an Upper).

At Exeter, my guide (also an Upper) did have 4+ hours per night. She also mentioned a night where she had ten hours of work.

Only 4 hours of work a night? I laugh. Of course, I usually spend 2-3 hours on one subject a night (but not that long on the others) because I’m taking classes that might be a bit “too hard” for me.

The work is hard and time consuming, but not mind-numbbingly kill-yourself hard. It takes a while, but also often depends on your dorm atmosphere and how easily distracted you are.
There are also usually a lot of frees during the day, and lunch is decently long, if you haven’t finished (which I never seem to do). Usually takes me like 4 hours at night and an hour or two in the morning and during frees.
If you’re really worried, don’t join an evening music ensemble because those two hours tend to be really important to your homework-ing.

4.0 GPA at Exeter?

In response to your question, I suppose it depends on your definition of “fun”. Academics at Exeter definitely feel “fun” a lot of the time to me, but not all of the time. If you want to go to Exeter, be sure that you find (some kinds of) Academics fun.

On the other hand, since arriving at Exeter I’ve made an observation about Exonians: They LOVE to complain. If you get a chance, take a look at the Exonian some day. One article that particularly sticks in my mind is that of a girl who was complaining about how much she hated parents weekend–she had to interact with her parents. Extreme example aside, the Exonian is a forum for the seemingly endless articles about “not enough sleep”; “internet cuts off to early”; “nix saturday classes” “keep saturday classes”; and so on.

In the end, a love of academics will help, but an understanding that people love to exaggerate their institution’s difficulty, therefore patting themselves in the back, is KEY.

I’m in eighth grade. 1 hour of homework on easy nights. Most of the time 2 hours. I’ve had a few 4 hour nights. What kind of homework are other eighth graders getting?

Me? I get about five hours per night. I’m in 8th Grade-Small Public school, and it’s nothing special

3-4 hours is an average night. Sometimes 5-6 if I have a lab report or an essay due. That reminds me, should be working on those essays… :D

Hahaha I feel sorry for you young kids, I never have homework :D

First, I’ll be accepted to Exeter, then I will think about the amount of h.w etc… :D!

People definitely work just as hard at other schools. Just b/c PEA has the CCRep of being harder doesn’t mean in reality that it is so much harder than other schools of a similar caliber.

I’m in eighth at a good private school and I’m very efficient so usually have no homework-30 minutes a night.

Wow… that’s much more than I have now… I have usually 15 minutes per day, and that’s usually only from Language Arts (my only truly challenging class). I personally wouldn’t mind it too much. It stops boredom, and I don’t think that Exeter has busy work.

I get about 1 hour - 2 hours of homework a day. Then again I am a freshman at a top 50-60 public high school in the U.S so that is probably why. I think at most top Boarding schools you’re looking at about minimum 3 hours of homework. At schools that use the Harkness method; in english at least that some of the homework is to prepare for the discussion the day after. We do this at my school sometimes, the amount of preparation reflects the discussion the next day.
