Dobie vs. Castilian

I have toured both and from what I've observed, it seems that Dobie's facilities are much nicer than the Castilian's and the rooms are MUCH more spacious however it seems as though there are a TON of international students at Dobie, especially compared to the Castilian.

I'm trying to decide which off campus dorm to stay on and would appreciate any help from people who attend UT or have lived in either dorm!!

i was wondering the same thing a couple weeks ago,
i emailed one of the agents who lived in dobie when she went to UT
and heres her response. i have to say that it was really convincing and actually matched what i saw when i visited there.
but bias or not? i will let you decide.

im gonna be living in Dobie for my freshman year! :D

==========
Location- Dobie is closer to campus than Castilian. Especially since you have to exit the Castilian on the west side of the building and go around the corner to even get on to Guadalupe (the drag). You can literally go out Dobie’s front door and be 12 steps from campus. Also, there is a bus stop right outside of our building that is on the 40 acres bus route and the west campus bus route.

Staff- I love the staff that is here. They really do care about the residents! Our RA’s are awesome. Their job is to make sure that you have fun and have a good experience. This includes having resident functions which makes it really easy to meet people. A few of our major events are our VolleyBrawl tournament, Talent Show, and Casino Night. VolleyBrawl starts at the beginning of the fall semester and lasts about a month. All of our floors play against each other. This is a really fun icebreaker for everyone! The talent show is definitely a crowd pleaser. Who doesn’t love watching their neighbor sing and dance?! Casino night is held in the spring. We rent out the ballroom in the Hyatt Downtown and have a formal Casino Night. It is amazing (especially since there are a ton of prizes to be won! )

Floor plans/views- Dobie has far more floor plans and options than the Castilian. I know that you are interested in a corner suite (one of my favorites, by the way) which has far more space than the rooms in other Dorms. The corner suite not only has 2 bathrooms, it has a huge living room with huge windows with panoramic views of Austin. I attached some pictures of a corner suite for you to look at. Having that extra living room is so nice. It really helps alleviate any sort of conflict that may arise between you and your roommate. For example, if you want to watch TV and he wants to study, you do not have to argue about it. You can watch TV in the living room while he studies in the bedroom. My older sister lived at Castilian and she did not like that she had to share a bathroom with 3 other people (a total of 4 ) instead of 1 other person like at Dobie. That alone caused many roommate and suitemate issues. That was one of the main reasons I chose to live at Dobie. Edwin I know you will love it here, I really hope you choose dobie! Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any additional questions.

i live in dobie.

the food phukkin sucks

really? so you think i should go with the 7 meals plan?

no i’d do 14 just to be safe, it does not cost that much more.

But I eat meals in my room or go out to eat at least once a day so my unlimited plan was a waste

Does anyone have a picture of a Dobie corner suite?

I toured em both 2 weeks ago and personally I preferred Castilian. Much closer to the heart of campus and the comp sci building, which is where I’ll be. I thought the rooms were nicer, although not as big. Also I already know my roommate, so having 2 other people just sharing a bathroom doesnt seem to be a problem to me. Dobie was nice but the location is too far for me. Also the rooms just seemed to be of a lesser quality, even though they were bigger. And for some reason I really got this feeling of vertigo when I was in their little test room. Everything felt off balance, and I just felt sick. Also it seems like Castilian has nicer lighting and much more natural light, along with opening windows.

Foodwise I didnt eat anything, but the Dobie cafeteria looked nicer. I havent heard much about the food from either place.

We need people from both dorms to come in here and give their honest opinions. I need to decide.

Are the two dorms the only options? I am completely clueless about dorms and ill be attending UT.

No these are off campus dorms not associated with UT, there are other off campus dorms like:
The Towers
Hardin House (all girls)
SRD (all girls)
Though those are housed with a ton of greek bound students.

Umm and there are a ton of on campus dorms like:
Duren
San Jacinto
Jester
Honors Cluster
Prather
Roberts
Kinsolving
and a ton others I can’t think of right now:) Hope that helped

I’d really like to see some pictures of what Dobie rooms look like. There aren’t any on the website, which is a little troubling…

So which is actually closer to campus? I’ve been getting different answers on this, and I can’t really tell from the maps on their sites.

What would people choose off campus dorms? I dont understand why if theyre so worried about it being close to the campus? Is it cheaper or something?

I have a lot of Dobie pictures i took when i visited!

msg me your email address and i will send them to ya

@dhs

OC dorms are actually a little cheaper, but they also offer nicer rooms and overall living areas. Neither dorm is too far away from campus; whatever one is closer depends on what landmark you are using to judge the distance. Both are only a block or two away, but Cas is at the opposite end of Dobie so it depends on where your classes are.

And another reason why I would be in a private dorm is because I am rooming with my friend who is going to go to ACC and transfer over; you cant do that in a UT only dorm.
