Doctor Shadowing question.

didn't know where this should go but since it involves my highschool life im putting it here.

so i wish to become a doctor and i need some med related ECs. i was thinking of shadowing a doctor/ clinical work. (i have a lot of family firends where i can go to there clinic and observe what happens or just shadow them with the patients permision.)

only problem is who should i ask to shadow? the hospital affilitated with the clinic or the doctor himself? i know i have a better chance if i ask the doctor himself/herself.

Ask the doctor himself. Family friends are even better, because your parents can ask for you.

personally i can ask the doctor instead of my parents.

thank you so much. i think ill wait for 2 or 3 other replies so i feel satisfied

What type of doctor do you want to shadow? Do you have a family doctor you can ask? If you already know a doctor (or relatives doctors…?) it would work better, I think. They probably know a bit more of your background instead of a random hospital doctor.

I ended up asking my own family doctor to shadow him a few times, and it was an amazing experience. And yes, you should ask the doctor. It shows responsibility, initiative, and interest.

i know several doctors cause my dad and mom graduated with these guys from med school and they all live like literally 10 minutes from eachother.

2 of them are cardiologist, 1 a physician, and a dermatologist.

there a few others but i don’t know them that well but my parents do.

i wanna shadow people that i know a lot about and that they know me.
it would feel strange ‘shadowing’ a doctor i don’t know much about and i could be treated like a nuisance.

also i should get a letter from them saying i went to to there clinic right? what should the letter say?

i could start shadowing this next weekend.

I’ve shadowed 3 different doctors at two different hospitals (not family friends) and for both places I needed to fill out paperwork because of HIPPA policy, etc. I’d contact the affiliated hospital (if any) first, then once approved w/ any necessary paperwork, ask the doctor. It would also be good if you could get a letter saying you went to the clinic. You could write something up yourself and have the doctors sign it. Enjoy your shadowing!
