I got a 30 on the ACT. No SAT I, but will be taking SAT II's this saturday.
I will be retaking the ACT October 28, but assuming my score doesn't improve, are my chances close to none?

Thanks.

I thought you said in your earlier thread that you DO have an SAT I score. It will show up on your SAT II score report, I'm pretty sure.

Yes I do, but I'd like people to tell me based on the ACT alone, because it will be the higher score of the two and therefore the one that the college will consider.

Taking a quick glance back at your earlier posts, I just don't see much in the background you report that says "Harvard material." (I was just at a college meeting last night for a program my son is in, and the director made it very clear that not every student, not even every strong student in a selective program like that, is up to going to Harvard.) So, since you are sincerely asking about chances, my thought is that you should put a lot of effort into finding other schools to apply to. I would never discourage anyone who is eager to attend Harvard from applying to Harvard, but be aware that lots of other students have that eagerness, and they set up stiff competition for you.

Good luck on your college applications.

The above was said by "tokenadult". The guy he was referring to as "not Harvard material" has got in early. ACT=30 , and this translates to a SAT1 of 1980. WHO would have told iamnervous that he has a chance??Doesn't evryone feel really happy for iamnervous?!

My point?

1)chance threads are bogus
2)Personality, transcript, and other stuff matter much more than standardized testing; though if you do have gr8 scores, than all the better!
3)I think it's ok to give people a fair assesment of their chances if they ask for, but don't say "you're not harvard material"--really ignorant imo.

Anyways, congrats iamnervous!

No, it doesn't eliminate your chance at all. I got a 31 and got accepted. My SAT was lower when you convert, so the ACT is what was used.

I'm very happy about iamnervous--he says he wants to revise his screenname ;) --getting in. I haven't checked by looking back at old threads, but I'm pretty sure that I said in the very first thread that he and I both posted in that the most crucial thing to do for applying to Harvard is to get in the application. "You can't get in if you don't apply" is something that was said at the first Harvard information meeting I attended.

I will agree with the statement that usually chances threads yield a low number of correct predictions of chances, because what gets posted on a CC thread is not the whole college application file, AND because admissions officers have their own reasons for making decisions that we are not privy to. But, definitely, congratulations to the OP in this thread, and good luck to all the other applicants for Harvard class of 2011.

iamnervous...just by chance are you a recruited athlete, urm, legacy, or have "connections"? I have nothing against these things by the way...I'm just trying to get a clearer view of what Harvard is looking at.

i'm also very happy for iamnervous. we both proved that test scores aren't as important as you may think!

"iamnervous...just by chance are you a recruited athlete, urm, legacy, or have "connections"? I have nothing against these things by the way...I'm just trying to get a clearer view of what Harvard is looking at."

I am neither an athlete, a legacy, nor do I have any connections or even know anybody personally that went to Harvard (or Yale). I'm as shocked as anyone that I was accepted with those stats, especially after reading the stats of many CC'ers. It just proves to me that grades aren't the determining factor in admissions, at least not in mine. Though this may sound cocky, but the fact that I'm neither a legacy, athlete, or have 'connections' makes me more proud that I got accepted.

"he says he wants to revise his screenname"

Done :)

I'm smiling too. Congratulations.

Ummmm... Iamnervous... did you just respond to your own question, two months later? :)

Oh, and, yes, CHANCE THREADS ARE BOGUS!!!

lol, congrats!

-maybe it's different for international students, especially those whose first language is not english

Congrats!!

hmm...Admiral, your messege box's full:(

"Ummmm... Iamnervous... did you just respond to your own question, two months later? "

No, I wasn't answering my question, I was confirming what AboutTime said, lol.

congrats, iamnervous.

Looking back on what you said about your stats, what DO you think actually got you in? (if it's not too personal a question).

Thanks :)
I honestly think that my film-making and my focus on my 'passions' got me in. I sent them a copy of one of the documentaries I made, and also a 5-minute clip of another one. I showed them that I have three passions: Politics, Film-making (including several political ones), and the Sciences (biology, chemistry). I focused on the passions throughout the application. My three essays were relating to them too: Common App was political, extracurricular common app essay was about film-making, and Harvard supplement was about a teacher who was my inspiration for the sciences.
By focusing on these three things, I think it gave the adcoms a general idea of who I am and where I stand. Bio/Chem -> Academia, Visual Media -> EC/Hobbies, Politics -> Beliefs/Opinions/Perspectives.

thanks for your response, iamnervous.

Looks like that was very well planned application package. You deserve it :)
