Does a given major's college matter?

Hello CC,

So I understand that in essence your major doesn't matter when applying to med school. I get that part. Now, I plan on majoring in Biochemistry. Does it particularly matter what school I go to? I can get a full ride at Indiana University, though it's not particularly well known for its biochem program. Knowing that med school is expensive, it seems like a big plus. That said, schools like Washington and Twin Cities aren't too far out for me, but will be more expensive. My parents have offered to pay for everything, though I don't think they feasibly can.

TL;DR, does it matter which college I go to so long as it's semi-decent and I maintain a high GPA/MCAT score?

^^^bump^^^

Anybody?

It doesn’t really matter. Save your money, make the most of the opportunities at the cheaper school, and get into med school. Good luck! :)

Thanks for the reply! Anybody else have some input?

I disagree. I think the college and degree matters. It may be less important for some programs. I have worked with students with great numbers who did not make it into med school.

I do agree with the comments about being careful how much money you spend as well.

You’ll probably find these resources useful, come to think of it:

DON’T post your question there – they’ll just tell you to read the 100’s of threads by people asking the same question you asked. Because everyone asks that question, and the answers are always the same as in the second link. :p

basically, no.

Do not major in biochemical. It limits your class diversity. Med schools want to see that you’re. Not just about the.science.part but human interaction something.in the humanities.

I disagree. There are strengths and weaknesses potentially to any major. If you do well, you will be looked upon favorably.

If you keep your GPA above 3.5 and do well on your MCATs you will most likely get into a med school. Some schools brag that 30 to 40 percent of grads instead of the usual 20 percent get into med school but they sometimes limit who they will write letters of rec for or counts grads up to 10 yrs after graduation, in order to raise their stats.

With the prospect of you or your parents carrying 100k or more of UG debt, I would take the free ride and work, very hard to get the best grades you can. If you are a rising senior or younger consider the BA/MD or BS/MD programs also since some give tremendous merit aid and you can save the stress of the MCAT by skipping it.

If you find Biochem too tough to get all A’s in, switch to regular bio since getting the highest GPA is the goal as long as you include the core courses ( organic, bio, physics etc.). Good luck.

Major in whatever you are interested in.

Go to the school where you fit in the best (and if possible, try to avoid debt)

Get the highest GPA possible

Study like hell for the MCAT and get the best score.
