I applied to the CALS biology. Do they admit a certain number of applicants per major? Or is the admission major-blind?

i think major does matter (just look at aem), but it sounds like you picked the major you wanted and didnt ask this question before you applied, which is good.

For CALS, major does matter. Each department within CALS recieves applications and decisions will be only based on the number of applicants in that major within CALS.

so its actually the faculty in each department of CALS that make the decisions, not the general CALS admissions people?

well I think they both review it and come to a consensus on it, since you have to send your common app and your supplement to different departments.

thats not how it is, the dept. leaders make a criteria on what they are looking for in the students they want admitted, and give that rubric to adcom. then adcom does their best to match students to that rubric, and it is updated every two years. When students have been selected, the depts. are notified. The only time the decision of acceptance comes into any direct control of a dept. leader or member is when one is waitlisted, deferred, or appeals.

yes, it matters, but don't worry about it. apply for the major you like.

agreed (10)
