Does Algerian count as a URM?

I'm starting to research schools and I was wondering what to put for race. African American is a politically correct way of saying black imo, and even though I am more African than some black people I can't put that. However, I do want to let it be known that I am not a run of the mill white guy either. I'm not Arab (i'm berber) so I don't even know how to get classified.

Any help is appreciated!

Algerian is a nationality? What do YOU consider yourself? What color is your skin? factors such as these should be taken into account, but are not sole deciding factors when it comes to race.

No it is not, I’d usually put just white. but some of my korean friends who applied already didn’t just put asian, they put korean in the “other” box next to it. Same with my vietnamese friends and a german guy who was an immigrant, as am I (i’m a citizen now though).

I’m not sure if Middle Eastern is considered white…probably best to put African American.

Yes, Algerian is a nationality. Algerian is a nationality just like American. Nationality is not the same thing as race or ethnicity. He is asking about ethnicity. Anyway, Algeria is in North Africa, and North Africans are considered middle eastern. Middle eastern is considered white ( it says White (middle eastern) ) on applications. African American on the applications refers to people that are black. You can put “other” if you want, or check White (Middle Eastern).

Incorrect. As ln states, the White category specifically states that it includes ME, just look at the CA. You could mark other and Algerian if you like, but it won’t make any difference. If you really want to show adcoms that you’re not “a run of the mill white guy”, you can demonstrate it in your ECs or essays.

thank you entomom! Yep, Caucasian is what it says on all my official documents so that’s what it will be. Thanks to everyone for clearing this up.
