When I was in 8th grade, I remember being told an art portfolio will help SO MUCH when getting into college. That argument was probably biased, since an art teacher told me, but I still believed it. So I decided to go out of my way to take art classes in high school, instead of study halls, which I don't really mind. I am currently a sophomore.

I had planned to go on to AP 3D Studio Art, where I would make a portfolio, but now that I have thought about it it seems very unnecessary to put effort into class since I don't want to major in art. I want to major in computer science, and possibly major/minor in music or psychology.

Therefore, I decided I could just make an art portfolio on my own... if it's worth the time and effort. My question is, how much will an art portfolio improve my college resume if I don't plan on going to an art school? Will other colleges care? Should I carry on with making an art portfolio, since I already made many art projects anyway?

A lot of colleges accept art supplements and I think it can be a very valuable part of your application. You don’t have to want to major in it to show them that you have a talent. I’m submitting dance supplement and my intended major is psych or molecular biology.

Go for it!

Also, if you’re only a sophomore you may not have created your best work yet so just put together the portfolio when it’s time. Don’t try to make art FOR the portfolio per say, rather select art you’ve already made that would be a good part of the portfolio. Does that make sense?

Yes I understand. My intentions weren’t really to create a portfolio asap, but to know whether or not it was a good idea so I could make decisions in the future based off of that.
Thanks for your input! :)

Most people should not send extra stuff, because it’s just more stuff for the admissions people to read, but if you’re truly a talented artist it could probably help.

I’ll take that into consideration too. I’m not amazing at art, but I’m pretty good.

Hi everyone! I was wondering if you guys know universities that do accept art supplements with the applications even if your major isn’t art. A list of the universities would be wonderful. Thanks! :)
