Does anybody applied "Music Education" in Vanderbilt can share any idea?

My D want to apply Vanderbilt “music Education”, Her SAT 1440, Is that not high enough?

Vanderbilt’s music education program is a 5 year BM/MEd dual degree. You apply for the graduate degree during your junior year of college. Since you’re being accepted into an undergraduate program heavy in performance, you’re considered the same as those applying for performance majors.

Vanderbilt’s middle 50% SAT for regular decision this year is 1500-1580. Early decision was 1480-1560. It would best if you could get in these ranges, then it would just be left up to your audition. I would suggest retaking the SAT or taking the ACT.

However, if your D is interested in Vanderbilt, have her apply even without the scores. You never know what can happen with an auditioned program. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your reply!

@Echoling No problem! If you have any more questions let me know. I’ll be a freshman at Blair next year (in performance though, not education).

@albertsax Thank you so much! VU is my D"s dream school. and music education is her first choice. She is going to take another SAT or ACT hope can up 1500+. If you have time could you please give her some advise on how to prepare the music part application and auditioned. She is the first chair of flute in her band also play Saxophone and piccolo. When she was six she learned the piano for 7 years.Any suggestion you can give to her will be great! I am very appreciate!

@echoling Does she have a teacher? If not she should get one right away, since (s)he would be able to lead her through the whole application process, such as picking out audition pieces, etc.

You should take a trip with your D out to Nashville to have a trial lesson with the flute professor. If VU is her first choice, have her say so.

ED definitely helps for admission. HOWEVER she will need to be comfortable with the music by the time she auditions, which is either November of ED1 or January for ED2. Don’t have her audition early if she really isn’t ready. If possible, I’d also try to schedule a “practice audition” at a local state school (i.e., apply and audition early at a school she might not care about just to get experience).

You need to submit a pre-screening recording with your Blair application (the requirements are on the audition page). I did mine at a professional studio, which isn’t necessary but definitely didn’t hurt. I would suggest having her teacher be present during the recording to guide her.

There’s a basic music theory exam on audition weekend. Have your D look through the sample one online and make sure that she knows the material; otherwise, she’ll have some studying to do.

If there’s anything I didn’t cover let me know! There’s definitely a lot to this process. Good luck!

@albertsax I passed this information to my D, She said very helpful. She asked me to say Thank you to you! She has a private flute teacher. Her teacher said she will help her to through this process.June we will visit VU. She is trying to get a trial lesson with the flute professor. Now she is busy on her AP and SAT Subject test.Every information you gave to her all great. We are very appreciate your kind!I just wander if she is not the music performance major but the music education, is that the audition will not be too competition! Maybe not! Just wish her work hard to get her dream school!Thank you so much! ! !

I’m a bit late to the party, but I just got accepted to the flute studio as a transfer into the Ma5 program (after two years of college) with a 3.93 GPA (college), a 1460 SAT, and a 33 ACT. When I previously applied as a freshman, I got rejected at the prescreen round (this was while Philip Dikeman was there). I’m looking forward to studying with Professor Barth, I strongly recommend she takes a lesson! Feel free to shoot me a PM!
