sorry…i know if you are cool or intellectual or something you are supposed to love jazz but it really makes my ears bleed!

I don’t think it’s about being cool or intellectual, I just think it’s about liking music. If you like music, you’ll like jazz.

any specific reason you can think of?

lol.

I will say that it depresses me sometimes hearing some really good songs being played on crappy store speaker systems as ‘muzak’ - it really does an injustice to a lot of the stuff they play lol.

Thanks for the link, OP! Great tunes.

Absolutely love JAZZ. Why turn away from good relaxing music.
Smart way to end the day. Sit back, relax and let the music soothe your soul…

i must be listening to the wrong jazz! there is nothing relaxing about disonance (sp) and blaring noise…maybe you are thinking of kenny g? is that jazz? its relaxing i guess…

Yes, Kenny G is a jazz musician. Not all jazz is dissonant blaring noise. Just like how not all ballet is so atonal that the crowd riots.

Both posters:

One who said that jazz is relaxing
The other who said that jazz is blaring noise

are ignorant. Come on folks…it’s a whole genre of music. Isn’t there both relaxing rock and blaring dissonant noise rock? Obviously. If someone really could write off the whole genre of jazz, then I would suggest that they don’t like music to begin with, since there is such a large variety within the genre.

I would just like to respectfully reiterate the point that tiff is an idiot.

youre not going to get much of a jazz scene in wyoming in general, i SUSPECT, forgive me for being nyc trash raised in baku.

but yea i was presented music, not force-fed it. i happened to like it. realized after many many many years of intense nitpicking with classical and trying to keep a stiff upper lip before the piano, that the ‘new sound’ was, is, and probably will be jazz, although the last one makes little sense.

i dont care for the degree of academic praise it has conferred … i dont care that 400 dollar center parterre tickets for jarrett imply SERIOUS MUSIC.

its just beautiful beautiful stuff, and it is the new frontier. its vast like the universe but i dont think it a genre…more like a part of integrated music of the day. how would it come about without bach…how would techno come about without soul and funk…that rhythm and drive, essential to drive us forward musically …i sound very trite i realize, but im just on a musical high, so to speak.

i like, for instance…vagif mustafazadeh…

soviet guy in the 70s making sounds like that? it just shows music conquers all, even in a country where jazz was banned.

so YES, people listen to jazz like you do, don’t despair.

Jazz has hit a dead end since the 70s? What about Kenny Garrett, Chris Potter, Michael Brecker, Randy Brecker, Eric Alexander, Chuck Findley, etc? The fusion/contemporary jazz scene is still well alive.

I listen to it occasionally. For me, it’s kind of one of those genres of music that I really have to be in a particular mood to get into, like classical.

And seriously? You guys are getting so defensive over something that, in the grand scheme of things, is really quite trivial.
