So... I got in pton ED, and I'm a major audiophile... I play guitar and listen to all kinds of music (jazz, rock, rap, classical, electronic)

I just want to find reassurance that I'm not going to find myself in any kind of musical drought at pton...

So who loves to create/listen to music?

P.S. I'm going to join the jazz bands at pton and hope to start a student-run rock band of some sort while there too, so if anyone's interested... ;)

hey im a huge hendrix fan.,,,,,,listen to a lot of blues and jazz. little milton, j lee hooker, janis joplin, etta james, muddy waters, brownie mcghee,....
i alo play the guitar( and slide pretty well) got my own recording which i ssent to Princeton. i also play the harp,,,, so its great to hear about another guitarist on this forum. Mikstar ur rock band idea is pretty good,,so if i do get in im with u all the way man

Hey mercurysquad... what kind of music do you record? I dabble in recording on my computer. Nothing much beyond those cheesy midi presets and a few guitar tracks though. I was thinking about taking some electronic music courses from Paul Lansky when I get up there. Radiohead actually sampled him in Idioteque (kid a)...

And hendrixfan, that's really cool. I'm from the south, so I've done my share of blues playing, lol... I'm not very good with a slide though.

Definitely! I love music. It's basically the main reason I chose Princeton ED. I play the trumpet and I'll be playing in All-Eastern Band in Baltimore this March. Are any of you in that? I could have auditioned at the top music schools like Peabody, Eastman, and NEC, which was what I would have done (for a double degree) if Princeton rejected me ED, but they didn't, so that's good. I'm just hoping the ensembles and music scene are as vibrant at Princeton as I heard they are. So yes, I'd love to start up some ensembles like a rock band (with horns) or brass quintet. Count me in.

Your (former) college plans sound exactly like mine (were), dvd56x... The Rochester/Eastman program was my second choice. Tell me, are you still considering a career in music after Princeton? I am, but oddly enough I don't think I want to major in music there... I just plan to get a performance certificate (maybe 2 (jazz and computer music))

Strange that you mention All-East... I'm leaving for my state's All-West Jazz tomorrow.

I think it would be cool to have a career in music. I'm going to major in Financial Engineering or Economics and get a certificate in Music Performance. I would love to play and gig on the side and make some money that way. When I graduate, I will probably not have music be my sole income. I will probably work in business and make music a hobby, playing in some wedding bands and brass quintets etc... Who knows. I sometimes think it would be awsome if I just went down the music route and got a good job playing for a major orchestra, but I didn't see that happening, so I'm fine with playing trumpet on the side. I refuse to let myself get worse in college with all the studying for other classes.

I record almost ANY imaginable kind of music, so yeah I'm more of a recording engineer than a musician ;). I compose mostly Indipop (indian pop music) with a friend. Apart from that, I write the usual pop/rock music as well as techno/trance/house etc. So you see it traverses the whole panorama (except country/jazz etc.).

MIDI - get a good soundcard!! I suggest an SB live or audigy for excellent MIDI, or if you can afford one, get a Yamaha SW1000xg. I make pro quality MIDI files (which is how I learnt to record on the computer).

What software/soundcard do you use? I use Sonar 3.0 running on SB live and Yamaha YMF744 card.
