First, going to an ivy league school gives you a huge edge over others. The quality of teachers, teacher accessibility, research opportunities etc.. are amazing. In that respect, ivy leagues schools are similar. I think is it perfectly valid for someone to apply to HYP, Columbia, UPenn etc.. simply because they are ivies. It is impossible to "fall in love [as some people call it]" with a school merely by visiting it once. After all, all of you are applying to Columbia mainly to excel in academics in order to secure your future. Prestige can also be very important. So isn't it wrong to accuse people who are very concerned about their education, their futures, and their jobs of making invalid judgements?

For me, Columbia plays a small role, if any. Graduate school is the most important thing for me. Depending on how well I use my time at which ever school I end up going to will be more important. Another important factor is who my father is and the connections I've made through him which will help me in the business world.

"After all, all of you are applying to Columbia mainly to excel in academics in order to secure your future."

Columbia is simply the place I've decided I would enjoy the most. This does not mean if I don't go to Columbia I won't be securing my future. Heck, it might work out better because I might get into Stern or Wharton and meet many more interesting people (in the field I plan to pursue). Excelling in academics certainly doesn't secure me a future in Business (you can go to the MBA forums and check out the 117 post long thread on this topic).

Just my opinion, I could be totally wrong.

I wish people would stop applying to all the ivies and show off how many "ivies" they got in...i mean, Columbia and Dartmouth (for example) are very different places but people don't care and apply to both just because they're both "ivy schools"....i hate that!!

"And what really sucks is that those people actually end up at their "good name school" whether it be an Ivy or Stanford/DUke etc etc...."

i dont understand..why shouldnt they?..if they have what it takes to get in...we dont have to only apply to the school we just LOVE..that would be actually stupid..so whats wrong with applying to make schools?...whats wrong with applyin to yhOR WHATEVER..after not getting into the school you wanted to go

"no but really...there are so many people at my school who are EDing it to Princeton, but if they don't get in, their first plan is to apply to Columbia, Harvard, Yale, Penn, etc."

You dont have to love a school to apply..ehh..why do ppl apply to many schools?..soo they dont get screwed in the end..i see nothing wrong with it..if they got that stats..who cares..they will end up going somewhere

"You dont have to love a school to apply..ehh..why do ppl apply to many schools?..soo they dont get screwed in the end..i see nothing wrong with it..if they got that stats..who cares..they will end up going somewhere"

Yeah...I guess I can live with that argument.

"of course prestige is a factor.
or else nyu would just be as good."

btw OVERALL, the education in nyu is not that great..i think actually people only apply there because of its name...dont get me wrong..some of the departments rock..but the to get an education there i think isnt worth it..too expensive..id rather do cuny..thats how much i think NYU isnt really worth it..

why not suny?

hehe..oo i 4got..i just meant NYU..considering the amt of the tuition..the education isnt worth it..SUNY def rocks..compared to that..bing!..

HAhAHAA delfire you're so right..

anyway what is HYP...?

"being the only Ivy in New York City does have its attractions." this is true.. and subconsciously of course we like the fact that columbia is an ivy.... i mean id still be obssessed just the same amount even if columbia wasn't an ivy.. but still.. we cant deny the fact that the prestige is quite appealing...

but yeh.. i really think people who are JUST interested in the IVY STATUS should just f off.. and leave columbia to us .. who really love columbia for what it is.. regardless of whether it is an ivy or not..

and i really CANT STAND those people who are applying to all the ivies and all the prestigious name schools. theres this one mo fugger fagggottt in my grade who is absolutely the most SNOBBY stuck up BRAT ever to live .. and he's applying to all 8 ivies.. stanford, wustl.. duke.. like ALL the top schools yeh.. and NYU is his most "safety" school.. and i have to say NYU is NOT a safety.. maybe a match-safety for him.. but neway i just wanted to rant bout fagggottss like him..

OO.. and lots of people here don't know that columbia's an ivy... i mean lots of my friends were like.. what u wanna go all the way to COLOMBIA? wow.. how exotic lol..
haha lots of people are surprised when i tell them that columbia's in nyc..
hahaa

First, refrain from using offensive language on these boards. Second, there is absolutely nothing wrong in applying to all ivies (read my post above). Moreover, they have the stats to do so. Worry about yourself and not others. I've met people who have the same views as you and most of them

a) don't have the stats and dismiss others for their achievements

OR

b) have nothing better to do than complain

Sorry to be blunt, but this is what I see right now.

HYP = Harvard, Yale, Princeton

i agree w/ lolboyer..!!...

::sniff sniff:: i smell a catfight comin on..fight fight!

no..i dont think so..i just think people need to stop worrying about where others are applying and just make themselves appealing to school...basically you gotta sell yourself..hehe..

yeah sexidesi knows where i'm comin' from. all of us desis think alike ;)

a) don't have the stats and dismiss others for their achievements - excuse me.. but I DO have the stats otherwise I wouldn't be applying to good schools myself.. or Columbia ED for that matter..

OR

b) have nothing better to do than complain - and for your information i have every RIGHT to complain about this guy because he has been very RUDE to me and my friends.. and that was ONE complaint about him.. I could have gone on and on about him for ages. It was ONE rant.

If you want to be blunt go ahead.. but I am not going to be told by someone who has no idea what I am even talking about ..that the reason I ranted about a rude snobissh boy is because I don't qualify and/or I have nothing better to do....

My words exactly chris, thx.

lolboyer, I have nothing against people applying to colleges, heck, you can apply to a hundred colleges if I care. But it's just their motive that sometimes ticks me off a bit. Or should I say lack of motive.

But it's no biggie though, at least not for an argument.

yeh i know.. but it still peeved me off the way he/she was saying that i'm not qualified or i have nothing better to do.. when he clearly does not know this arrogant boy..

i'm applying to good schools and i have nothing against people who do apply go top schools. its just their whole attitude i was talking about .

anyhoo.. yeh you're right delfire ..no need for an argument!
