My wife and I love dancing and do it regularly. Our S is very apprehensive about joining a swing dance club at school. Do any of you have experiences you could share about dance clubs or classes at college? Thanks in advance.

I was in my school’s ballroom club for about roughly two semesters and it wasn’t a bad experience. Instructors would demonstrate certain moves and we could practice them with other people. Occasionally, the club would host balls as well; and those tended to be pretty good.

What exactly is he apprehensive about? He can always check out a club before joining and ask questions about it.

I used to take swing dance classes when I was in middle school. Then I stopped going after a year.

^ papertown - I don’t really know. He enjoys dancing with his friends at concerts in more free form fashion. It could be the structure. It might be that we (old folks) enjoy. It might be that his girlfriend isn’t into it. Or it could be any number of other things.

Ballroom is very structured at the beginning and doesn’t have much room for free-form improvisation and stuff that usually goes on in random college dances. Later on, after he knows how to do enough steps well (and after his partner learns how to follow well), he can start making up his own routines. But in the beginning he’ll have to start by practicing the exact routines the instructor presents.

My school makes us take four PE classes, so in addition to fencing, racquetball, and rock-climbing, I took “American Dance.” They taught us swing, waltz, and some kind of super-waltz (just really fast). It was pretty fun and easy to learn; I didn’t join the club, but I’ve heard good things.

^ Manorite Thanks for the reply. I think your “super-waltz” was probably the Viennese Waltz (much faster the the American or International Waltz).

Hm, no, it was one word and didn’t have “waltz” in it. Polka, maybe? I think that was it.

Polka - yes, that could be it. Very fast three step music that many people love. Thanks again for your comments.
