Does anyone here can call him/herself an avid reader?

Seriously guys, most people from my school havent touched a book in eons. Maybe except forcing their eyes onto a couple assigned books for English class. Other than that nobody actually prefers reading as a hobby

I know you can't get to anywhere with just reading alone (don't get me wrong, I believe this so called intellectual development the most valuable type of experience you can receive), but in the end reading benefits your other language related skills (vocab, speech, essay etc)

But in the end I just like to read. I got into reading last October due to some personal problems. And after all I just began to take a genuine interest in reading. I probably have read about 5000 pages since the beginning of the school year.

Some of my favorites include, Hundred years of solitude, Catch 22, Thus spoke Zarathustra, catcher in the rye, Heart breaking work of staggering genius... lot of stuff

I am currently working on Proust's "Search", and I m reading Lolita in between the volumes. My summer is going to be filled with fun activities, but I am looking forward my daily hour of reading more than anything else.

Talk about your reading experiences.

um...
Similarly and ironically, I get into reading due to personal problems too. Ain't all avid readers have some sort of personal problems? lol
Zarathustra is very hard to read if you don't have necessary background. But beside that I read philosophy, politics, and literature..
Examples include Das Capital, Clash of Civilizations, End of History, Analects, History of Chinese Philosophy, On bullsh it, Plato's complete works, some aristotle, Critique on pure reason, wealth of nations, inquiry into human understanding, society of spectacles, simulacra and simulations, war and peace, cambridge history of warfare, a lot of nietzsche's.. and so many others...
Intellectual development is important, but sheer pretentiousness could be yet another powerful motivation.

By the way, are you reading Proust in french or english? That book is freaking 5000 pages, the sheer volume scares me away as I have no patience for a piece of story. I hate harry potter and other book like that. I'd rather watch the movie.

I'm an avid reader.
I usually start a new book a week.

yea avid reader is probably someone who reads about 10,000 or more pages per year....

When I was younger I used to read like at least two books a week, but nowadays during school time I don't find much time to read beyond the reading assignments at school.
I'd still consider myself a avid reader, just because I read faster and more books overall than most people I know, if I have the time.
I've also had trouble finding good books in the past few months. Most books I read were either books I've been waiting to read for a long time or books I read due to lack of other reading material.

Through 6th grade I started one or two books each week then I just kind of stopped. Sometimes I read non-fiction and newspapers but I'm totally, permanently burnt out on novels. =</p>

I used to read a lot when I was younger, but now I average only a pathetic 30 or so books per year :/

I used to read a lot. And then I got sucked into "homework."

I'm an avid reader!! I read all the time mostly science fiction and fantasy stuff. But I do read other fiction from time to time. I really enjoy reading. I haven't had as much time during school to read but now that summer is here I will be reading a lot more. :)

Not enough time and I do not particularly enjoy novels. Last book I read is Getting Things Done from the David Allen Company. Now that's a good read.

Yeah. I'm an "avid reader."

Currently reading: Lolita -- Vladimir Nabokov

Recommended Reading: The Lord of the Rings -- J.R.R. Tolkien; Sophie's Choice -- William Styron; Le Petit Prince [The Little Prince] -- Saint-Exupery; Huis Clos [No Exit] -- Jean-Paul Sartre; The Crucible --Arthur Miller; His Dark Materials Trilogy -- Philip Pullman; The Moon is a Harsh Mistress -- Robert Heinlein; Atlas Shrugged, We the Living, The Fountainhead -- Ayn Rand; The Chronicles of Prydain -- Lloyd Alexander; Ender's Game series, Ender's Shadow series -- Orson Scott Card; This Side of Paradise -- F. Scott Fitzgerald; As I Lay Dying, The Sound and the Fury, Go Down, Moses, Absalom! Absalom! -- William Faulkner; Ulysses, Finnegans Wake, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man -- James Joyce

Worst Book Ever Read: Things Fall Apart -- Chinua Achebe

I mainly read classics. A lot of them. =]

I loved Things Fall Apart. I hate F. Scott Fitzgerald.
I'm an avid reader, but mostly during vacation time. I read during the year as well but not as much as I used to.

The Count of Monte Cristo is a good book. And I've recently fallen in love with David Sedaris's works.

I read all the time, before school, during school, after school, while eating, ect.
I conider myself an addicted reader. :)
I am currently reading the Janet Evanovich and Raymond E. Feist novels. I mostly read sci-fi/fantasy or murder mystery.

I find that I can read up to three or four books at the same time and not confuse plots or anything. Does anybody else do that?

Oh. I forgot Dune -- Frank Herbert.

Haha. I'm all about order -- start a book, finish a book, move on to next one. I'm sure I wouldn't get plots confused or anything, but I really like to just do one straight reading and finish. =]

I'm like some of the other people who've posted on here...I wish I could find the time to be the avid reader that I was back in seventh grade :(

I <3 reading. I read a lot of classics, and just finished East of Eden, by John Steinbeck. It's nothing like his other books (Of Mice and Men/Grapes of Wrath--uragghhh!). Just skip the first chapter, and it's good from then on, esp. once it starts talking about Cal and Aron.

That's one of the reasons why CC is so great. I can mention something like Atlas Shrugged, Ulysses, or Fight Club and people know exactly what I'm talking about.

I think of myself as an avid reader. It's harder to do during the school year when we have to read so much for English, but I've actually read a lot this year. I'll read a "classic" if it's interesting. The ones we've read for school this year have actually been really good (and last year, too).

The last book I read without it being assigned was a Goosebumps book in third grade.

I read a LOT of books, but for now, I've confined myself to fantasy. After I read George Orwell's 1984, I decided to give up serious reading for a while and just enjoy fantasy - after all most fantasy are just flush and forget:D No aftereffects.

I don't usually read non-fiction though.

I used to be... until high school came. It sucks how I can't read for enjoyment anymore because I need to read for my grades.... ):
