such as how many have to be taken and when? i've found barely anything on the subject

As far as math goes:

[JHU Mathematics](http://www.mathematics.jhu.edu/new/undergrad/advising_placement.htm)

Info under the ‘Decide your first math course’ link.

I don’t know about other subjects.

[JHU - Krieger School - Office of Academic Advising: Placement Exams](http://www.advising.jhu.edu/placement.php)

thanks, but i’ve already seen both of those links.

what it’s looking like is that i only have to take 2 placement exams. in which case i will be very very happy lol. but i don’t want to celebrate prematurely. so, incoming freshmen have to take JUST 2 exams? please let it be so!

Do the incoming freshmen have to take math placement exams even if they get a 5 in Calc. AB or BC test? What about English?

If you get a 5 on the calc exam, it will automatically show up on your transcript and you’ll receive the credit. If I remember correctly, for a language, you still do need to take a placement exam, though, and these are offered at the start of the year.

wombatlikewoah, unlike some other schools, Hopkins doesn’t require any placement exams at all. If you do want to place into higher level math classes and don’t have AP/IB credit, or if you want to take higher level foreign language classes, you’ll need to take placement tests, but not otherwise

Do non-math/science majors have to take placement exams?
If I’m majoring in International Studies, do I still have to be involved in that? As I understood it, that was not part of the requirement.

tanman: thank you so much! i’m very VERY happy right now. i have enough exams on my plate as it is lol. but one more thing, i want to take french, and i’m coming in with a 5 in spanish language/lit, do i have to take a placement exam for french even though i’m just starting out and don’t know diddly squat?

For English, if you place out of a class, does that take away from the distribution requirements required for graduation?

I’m not sure that it’s possible to place out of a English class?

I don’t think Hopkins awards credit for AP English classes. I could be wrong, but I don’t think so. Typically placing out of a class is more common in math and science.

Hopkins does not award AP credit for English. You have to take 12 writing intensive credits at Hopkins regardless. You cannot place out of them (it’s only 4 classes, that’s 1 a year).

And if you have no prior knowledge of a language, you do not have to take the placement exam, you just sign up for ____ Elements I.

If you’re an engineer working towards a BS degree, you’ll need 6 credits of writing; for Engineering BAs and all Arts and Sciences majors, you need 12.

Also, FYI, language Elements courses do NOT carry area designations so they won’t count towards distribution requirements for arts&sciences majors. However, the school of engineering used to, at least while I was there, still count them as H credits for engineers.
