I assume you try to get distribution requirements out of the way, but there is no help from advisers right? Any suggestions about which classes take first semester, and is it a mistake to take a class in a potential major or minor unless it also fulfills a distribution requirement?
@citymama9 Your student will get very detailed information about registration which does happen during the summer. A lot of information will come out after May 1st when all students have committed. Yes there are advisors that can help them. My advice would be not to take too hard of a schedule. I encouraged my son to not overdue it because there are so many new things and making friends and feeling like you fit in is so important. It worked out well for him.
@lbf Thank you:) When you say to not take too hard a schedule do you have any tips? Do you mean add an art class or try to balance reading intensive classes with a math class? My undergraduate college was so much less intense than what I heard Wake will be.
@citymama9 They have one required class each semester a writing intensive class and a freshman seminar. My DS took math, his writing, a religion class and a philosophy class his first semester. My opinion is if your child wants to be a biology major I wouldn’t take math, bio and chemistry. that would be a lot with the labs. I just think there are so many new things going on for these kiddos trying to adjust to a new environment, possible homesickness, making friends, feeling like they fit in and the inevitable sickness that goes around. I just think it gives them some breathing room for all of the changes. I’m sure some people would disagree with me but that is just my opinion so take it for what is is worth
That’s very helpful. Thank you. Did your son enjoy his philosophy class? Do you know which one he took? My D is very excited to take a philosophy class, something you don’t get in HS.
Just one of the intro class, he really liked it.
Per @lbf comment, your D will get very detailed information regarding everything she needs to do. It’s like the WFU Bible. You’ll find Wake does a tremendous job of communicating to both student and parents. As parents you’ll have the opportunity to sign up for newsletters, The Daily Deac, etc. which keep you informed. Through those and other items, you’ll see that community building is a priority at Wake Forest. It’s not just hype. On that note…Welcome to The Forest!
Go Deacs!
Thank you @rickle1 We’re already getting the daily newsletter. BTW, did your child take any amazing first yr classes that you rec? We know no older students
@citymama9 not sure about “amazing” but he really enjoyed his First yr seminar (class of about 15 kids, lots of short reading assignments that were the basis of class discussion. His prof assigned each student specific dates where they were responsible for leading the discussion. Heavy participation) and a Politics and International Affairs class. So much so that he decided to minor in Politics (Finance major) and has really enjoyed all of those classes to date.
@rickle1 Thanks so much. It’s so exciting to take a class, and then discover you found something you love. One of the best things about college
