I seem to remember a headshot photographers in New York thread, but now I can't find it. I'd love to resurrect it for info about a possible graduation gift for my soon to be graduating son. Anyone have similar recollections (or photographer suggestions).

Jasmom....hard to believe your son is graduating!!!

Not sure where the thread is but I can recommend a headshot photographer that we have used four times over the past eight years in NYC. His name is Glenn Jussen. Great graduation gift!

Great! Thanks for the info (maybe I fabricated the thread). It's been a short 4 years!

I've been a big fan of Chris Macke's work (mackephotography.com) for some time.

go to Reproductions.com and enter the zip code for NYC (East Coast), LA (West Coast)... once on the Reproductions page scroll down to "The Directory of Headshot Photographers" and click "browse the new book".

Thanks KatMT for giving that link. We use Reproductions for the headshot copies. Anyway, if you do go to that link, I should clarify that the photographer I mentioned would be listed as Jussen Studio.

Barry Burns is another excellent NY-based photographer. We got our copies made at Precision Photo, which is conveniently located in the same building as Barry's studio.

David Cross Photograpy is really great
My d went twice & I hope we can afford for her to go for her college photos! ( he actually is quite reasonable...we are just a little cheap!) I agree w Soozie about reprographics tho, & last I knew he was listed with them. Just amazing backdrops...

What are reprographics? What is an average price for quality headshots in NYC? I read an article that stated they cost about $1000. Could they really cost that much? I may have to get a second job by the time this is over. On second thought I bet it is never over....

These are marvelous suggestions. Some of the headshots are really amazing. I have a lot to look through over the next few days/weeks.

On the east coast most high quality headshot photographers charge between $600 and $1000 for a session (so, there is quite a bit of range, and you may find a photographer that you love who charges less) -- this may or may not include a make-up artist/ hair stylist, which is highly recommended for women.

This does not include the reproduction of your headshot -- this can cost about 75 cents to $1.00 per headshot I believe. There are places that specialize in headshot reproductions -- like "Precision Photos" and "Reproductions"

Many of my students who are freshmen and sophomores in college will find a very good photography student at school to take headshots for them. Many of them look quite good -- since the trend is now color, and many people have high quality digital cameras, it has become much easier to do this for a first headshot while still in school. Many of them will then send the picture off to a place ike Precision Photo to have copies made.

Most for my juniors and seniors will spend the money getting shots taken by a professional photographer... The costs can add up, but it is an expense of doing business. The other thing to think about is young actors often fine that they need new headshots every few years. You change so much through your early to mid 20s, and the headshot needs to look like you do now, not three years ago. This may be something else to think about when choosing a price range photographer -- this is not something that will last you for the next 10 years.

jasmom -- I would suggest that your S find a few photographers that he likes and schedule a meeting with each. He should choose the one within the price range with who he feels he has the best rapport.

GOOD LUCK! Getting headshots is a lot of fun -- it is like being a model for a day. :)
