I reallly wanted to apply to Choate, Andover, and Exeter, but my dad and I were going the Exeter Brochure, and he misread the part about financial aid. It turns out a whole bunch of people with parents who made over $100,000 a year got financial aid! (My parents thought it was only 1 person) So now I have to A) Wait for next year or B) Not Apply At All! I am so dissappointed and going on these boards makes me want to cry!

Sorry you missed the deadline. If your reasons for prep school were academic, remember that there's NOTHING a teacher can teach that you can't learn, better imo, yourself.

I remember when I applied to Harker (prep school in the San Jose, CA area). I applied two months after the application deadline, got in, and rejected matriculation. I'm currently enjoying my third year at a public HS.

then stop coming on these boards

lol i applied to Harker too in 6th grade, got in, and went to Head-Royce instead. Really happy there too.

andovergirlsomeday...have you taken or at least registered for the SSATs yet? if not, do you have PSAT results available? maybe you can ask the school if you could use that as an alternative. the financial aid deadline is on jan 15 (for most schools) and andover's deadline for boarders is feb. 1. there's ample time to set up an interview, write essays, give out teacher recs and so forth.

I know what your going through. I've been flip-flopping back and forth all year. I can't decide whether to stay at an okay high school or go to a prep school. I'm not thinking about andover or exeter or anything like that anymore, though I was. I finally decided, about two days ago, to go ahead and apply to two. I'm so stressed out right now. I keep looking down at the stack of course catalogs and application forms. It feels like they're staring back. I just wish I could have made a final decision earlier. I hope you have good luck. Oh yeah.. btw I'm applying to North-Field Mount Hermon & St. Stephens Episcopal School in Austin, TX.

hey wrathofgod64, i've heard of head-royce!!! i heard admissions is tough (esp. for 9th grade) because a lot of kids come from the middle school and stay for high school...how'd u get in?!! :)

paris23: i got in in 6th grade lol. Also, i can say with confidence that every single kid at HRS that applied in 9th grade is really smart. High school admissions in HRS is definitely a lot harder than middle school admissions, cuz 50% of the 6th graders in HRS are new. btw, where do u go?

not too late to apply. deadlines are on the 15th of january for the applications for all the boarding schools.. getting an interview will be tough but if you scramble, it may be possible. Good Luck!!!

Skylarsky, I wouldn't recommend SSS in Austin. It is not a good boarding environment. The ratio of day to boarders is way too high and a lot of the boarders are from Austin and disappear on weekends. I can tell you a lot about it if you want to PM me. Also, do you know NMH is going down to one campus? Not sure how good their financial situation is. Sorry to be discouraging. Have you looked at Cushing and Williston? Karen

Thanks.. I didn't really know too much about SSS apart from what my mom told me about the school (she used to live in Austin 15-20 years ago and knew a few kids who went there or something) and what I found out at the private school preview. I think I might have just liked the school because the lady seemed so nice and it's in Austin.. I love it down there. And yes, I did know that NMH was going down to one campus. I'll also look at some info from Cushing and Williston. Thanks again

The admissions lady from SSS IS nice, and being in Austin was great. So, great, in fact, that it is probably the school's downfall.
I know a lot about the MAPL schools (Mid Atlantic Prep Conference) and most of them have a good boarding to day ratio and are awesome- Blair, Hill, Lawrenceville, Mercersburg (a little remote), Peddie et al.

What is SSS? What are the best prep schools in Texas?

SSS is St. Stephen's School. It has a boarding community, but the day population is much larger.
There are excellent prep schools in Texas, but only St. Stephen's has boarding and is good academically (Hockaday, girl's school in Dallas, has a small boarding portion).
The top prep day schools are St. Mark's (boys) and Hockaday (girls) in Dallas, Greenhill in Dallas, Cistercian and Jesuit in Dallas, St. John's and Episcopal in Houston, among others.
St. Mary's Hall in San Antonio is a good prep school, but they dropped the boarding part.

I thought about applying to Hockaday but I'm not too fond of the all-girls population. I hate that I live just far enough from all the good schools in dallas that my mom won't drive me. I went to the private school preview earlier in the year and liked a lot of the schools but they're just too far. Most of them are in the park cities/north dallas when I live 40 minutes away from south dallas

you are about 4 years ahead of the most of us (juniors/seniors). chillout

karen: St. Mark's and St. John's are 1 and 2 academically in Texas. Kinkaid is better than episcopal; Episcopal had only one NMSF this year. St. John's had about 56? out of a class of about 126? I forgot..

speaking of MAPL, Peddie's new annenberg science center is going to be awesome! Middlesex, alos has a new sciense center that is very nice.
