I’d like to apply for financial aid, but I’m wondering if it affects my admission (acceptance-wise). If Barnard wants me but doesn’t want to grant my aid, would they reject? I don’t know much about this…

For US residents, Barnard is need-blind. Which means considerations for financial aid and admissions are completely separate. So, no, this will not affect your admission.

I’m an international student though

They may still be need-blind for admissions, but they do not guarantee to meet your need as an international student, I believe, as they do for US residents. Even then, what Barnard defines as “need” may well not match what you and your parents think you need.

If you will need financial assistance to attend Barnard, I just would apply and also apply for the aid. To me, the worst case scenario would be getting admitted and then realizing you cannot afford to go there.

Ok thank you!

:)

They say it does affect the chances. And I’ve also read on their website that there’re only three scholarships reserved for international students.

Adversa, who are “they”?

Good point.

[General Policies | Barnard College](General Policies | Barnard College)
"Barnard College has designated approximately three scholarships for international students in each first-year entering class. "

[International Students | Barnard College](http://barnard.edu/admissions/international-students)
"It is important to know that Barnard is need blind for U.S. citizens and permanent residents and need aware for international students (as defined for financial aid consideration). "

https://barnard.edu/admissions/apply/application-requirements/international-student-application-requirements
"Unfortunately, limited federal and state aid funds severely restrict Barnard’s ability to cover the need of all eligible international applicants. A small number of need-based scholarships are available to international students each year. Selection for these scholarships is extremely competitive and, given that Barnard meets full demonstrated need for admitted students, the review of applications for admissions for International Students is need sensitive. "

Of course, the website does not say financial need affects the chances using these exact words, yet I think it’s pretty obvious that when a college is need sensitive for internationals, chances vary according to need.

Thanks for the links, Adversa. When I first responded to to the OP, I was thinking that Barnard was need aware for internationals, but could not find that info. I did see the limited scholarships info, though.

Thanks again!

You have to call each school under consideration separately as to whether it is need blind to internationals, whether it meets need 100% to those they accept and if there are any merit awards available for internationals. These things can change from year to year.

A few years ago, a son’s classmate who went to Barnard and is a legacy there was advising an international student applicant, and the situation then was that Barnard was need aware for internationals but did meet the needs of those admitted. That could have changed, or may not even have been so as this is word of mouth.

Find out numbers of internationals with need admitted last year and the % of need met. That a school is not need blind in admissions is often not a deal breaker if they treat those who are accepted well in terms of aid packages. But this is info that you have to get straight from admissions as it is often a changing situation.

churchmusicmom, you are so very welcome!

it’s need blind until you get to the wait list. then it is no longer need blind.
