Does being a year younger hurt me?

Does being a year younger hurt me much?

I know SSAT is against those applying to my grade (I'm 13 applying for 10th grade, I will be 14.25 when year starts) but I still got an 89 (which is an OK score, though I would have gotten MUCH higher vs. others my age).

In terms of EC/Grades I am great on EC and decent on grades, neither will hurt me TOO much.

I know they love "top" people for sports but being so much younger I am not even in top decile (second quartile)...

Parents are against repeating, I am for whatever gets me into the schools...

So I want to know, especially from those who know about this, what is best?

Bump 10char

Did you skip a grade when you were younger or were you homeschooled? How did you get ahead a year?

Mainstream schooling, 5th to 7th…

At the time 6th just wasn’t enough…

Almost the same as my daughter, except that she was homeschooled 2 - 4 and did 5th in school while bro did 6th. It was a wash for both of them and I knew from brother’s experience that 6th would be pointless. One grade skip for brother wouldn’t be enough so we passed. She’s much happier now and yeah, they’re both in the same grade. They could be study partners if they ever had anything to study. :(

She’ll be repeating at BS.

“They could be study partners if they ever had to study”

I’m supposedly in the “Honors” track to MV calculus by my Junior year… I do not see how getting 100s in these classes without opening my book really gets me anywhere…

Oh well, once I get accepted (HOPEFULLY) to a BS I can start studying again.

I would say do a few self studies, I have learned more from those than from “certain” classes.

If your for whatever will help you then you have to consider repeating. I convinced my parents after awhile, because I just can’t afford to NOT be accepted to one the schools. I didn’t want to risk it applying as a junior, probably different situation from you.

Same for me, 11 percent of Exeter applicants are already ahead of me in terms of SSAT. Let’s just hope they look at everything and understand I am young.

If your applying for the same grade as them they’re not going to care that your younger. Either you repeat or you accept the fact that you’re applying for a grade where the competition is against older kids. Repeating is very common.

I guess… Oh well… I’ll send em an email stating I am open for either, can I do that?

Ya, my mom did that at first. Some schools understand what you mean…others just sound really confused. Deerfield and Exeter knew what I meant. But then I decided what the heck…I’ll repeat to avoid confusion.

But ya you can do that.

Cool thanks.

Just remember to check with your parents first- repeating means another $44,000 and I know they were reticent at first to pay for your bs.

But listen, this will play a role in your acceptance. You have to remember that even though you can handle the work, can you handle living in the dorms with older kids and the overall stress of boarding school as a younger student? If your answers are yes, I would say go for it, but don’t be too dissapointed if it doesn’t turn out the way you want it to. My honest suggestion would considering going to your neighborhood school for one more year and taking community college courses. Then apply again as a regular 10th grader and say that in this year you got challenge from the community courses. They will like that you took advantage of all the resources you could. Then you will be w/ your peers and most likey have more backround in the courses you would go in and take. I think that would be a win-win all around.
I wish you the best of luck!

I skipped 8th when I moved (the curriculum just wasnt as good as my old school) and I am applying for 9th. so no 8th and 2 9ths!
And you’re about the same age as me. what’s the cutoff for where you were? most ppl are 14 when they start 9th… and you would otherwise be going into 11th?
