Does being an athlete help college admission?

I know this Question sounds dumb but i wanted to know the truth. I have been told personally that I would only end up getting into a good UC ( LA,B etc.) because i compete in varsity track. And that would give a boost. However i do not beilieve this.

It helps a ton if you're good enough to get recruited, otherwise, it doesn't help anymore than any other average EC.

Don't wait for the coaches to come recruit you. If you have college-level track talent, or at least college-level potential, write to the coaches at schools you are interested in and be sure to include your PRs and any major meets you've won.

Whereas I let the coaches come to me :P
It really depends on the school, you could be great - a state champion - but that doesn't necessarily mean you're going to run for certain schools. It's about funding, grades, and what you bring to the team. I have a friend that got an almost full ride at Stanford because he's one of the best in the country at his event while I have another friend that got no money at his school even though he's an All-American.

You have to make the college team or else it just counts like any other EC.
