I was the class president my senior year and all I really did was make reservations for sneak trip, pass sneak trip with the schoolboard, and make sure everyone showed up to work sports concessions when we had it. Everything went smooth, but I really didn't do all that much. So when I told colleges I was class president, did they care?

Yes. Assuming it was elected. It's a number that top schools like to publish.

I'm my class president, but it's a big deal. We plan 75% of all school activities, run a number of community events, coordinate Homecoming weekend (dance, parade, football game), plan Prom, and raise all the money we need for all of our activities (over $40k). We do a lot of things, so it's actually a big role.

No, everyone knows school elections are popularity contests.

It's not a big deal at all.

Heck.. at my school, we didn't even vote for class officers. No one knew how to sign up to run and so 4 random kids in the sponser's class just decided amongst themselves who would be what position. It makes me so mad. And they didn't do anything all year.

popularity=ppl like you, well that's what's assumed

Its a popularity contest but its still a good thing to have on your app. My counselor once told me that there are a couple of positions at a school that makes you a "school leader":

Being president of the student body or a class
Being Editor in Chief of your school's paper
Being the captain of a Varsity athletic team
and being President of some type of political/debate society

I think it's sad that colleges view it that way. At my school, there's actually intense competition for positions and kids really do earn them, and are very active in them. It's not just something for college apps.

At my school is it DEFINITELY hardwork, but the fact is colleges may or may not pick up on that.

Even if it's just a popularity contest, it shows very well-developed social skills. That adds a lot of depth to the run of the mill 2300/4.0, many of whom just study all the time.

I agree 100% with koolcrud

yeah, i would think colleges would WANT someone who can win a "popularity contest" and do well w/ grades, etc...

I got elected because they knew I would get the job done and do it frugally. the president the last year almost bankrupted us on prom.

and we spent a great 5 days in denver

If you were an editor for an online newspaper (not your school's) since my school doesn't have a newspaper. Would that count as being a leader?

I think colleges typically understand that a class president usually involves very few duties. However, if did a lot of work, and put it in your application, then the admissions officers would understand that it actually meant something and you actually did work.

At my school, it is a popularity contest, and all the President does is buy decorations for a few dances.

My school didn't even have a class pres.

are you thinking class president or student body president?

My school didn't have either. If that was directed towards me.
