Does being from a small western State

really help your chances at Ivy schools? The Admission officers say no but the rumors persist.

Personally I think no but you have to wonder. I am a teacher in a large HS here in Montana, 2,100 students, and I was asked that in class Friday. I think the students knew my son had applied to Penn through his friends. I told my honors class that it did not help so study your tails off ;)

You are right, but many schools do want to have diversity, not just racial, but geographic and financial. If few kids from Montana apply to the ivies then their chances should go up - not a sure bet, but a "hook." There have been many discussions on these threads in the past about "hooks" and geography is one of them.

Drizzit:
Being from a small underrepresented state helps give a tip to a student who is being compared with another student with more or less similar profile. It won't make up for a mediocre transcript and ho-hum ECs or a pedestrian essay. So remind your students to study their tails off. ;)

Must. Not. Be. Pedantic.

sigh

Montana is a HUGE state -- fourth biggest in the country. It just doesn't have many people.

I TRIED not to type this...

There, there now Washdad. Try not to beat yourself up. We know you tried your darndest---:D

LOL good point Washdad.

Let em rephrase. A small state in terms of population.
