Does Berkeley admit by college or major?

I heard that the English major at Berkeley is impacted but I've also heard that Berkeley admits transfer students by college(??).. so why does it matter if English is impacted?

Basically, would applying for an "impacted" major to the College of L&S at Berkeley lower my chances of getting in? (I hope this question makes sense >__<;;) Or should I just apply for a different, non-impacted major (such as art history)?

I’m not entirely sure off-hand if English is impacted or has a high admit GPA. You are admitted by college, but there are some majors that are basically declared for you once you SIR. With L&S, this is much more lenient due to the diversity of the particular colleg. So technically, you could apply as Art History (as long as you have the pre-reqs) and then declare English (as long as you have the requirements to declare completed).

Information on the requirements to declare here:
[Berkeley English: The Undergraduate Program](http://english.berkeley.edu/undergraduate/index.html)

If this website is anything to go by, English is not an impacted major.

[Office of Undergraduate Advising: List of Majors](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/major/majorlist.html)

Humanities has the highest admit rate ;)

When you apply, you’re admitted by college. Once you’re in, you have to apply for a certain major, the more impacted it is the less of a chance you will have to get in to the major.

^^ Thank you guys so much for your help! I feel a lot less worried now~
