I am looking to double major in visual arts and art history and I am currently looking at Bowdoin and I was wondering if they have a good art program?
Bowdoin is a wonderful college on many levels, but I wouldn’t consider it a “destination” for either visual arts or art history. Both departments are small-ish, with limited factulty and just a handful of courses offered each year. Having said that, it does offer hands-on access to its campus art museum and studio facilities that were upgraded a couple of years ago. I’m sure you’d get a lot of personal attention and enjoy the close knit community.
For similar cultures and similar levels of selectivity and prestige, but with larger departments, wider course options and more extensive facilities you might look at Williams, Wesleyan, Hamilton, Kenyon. A bit less selective Conn College, Skidmore. Smith if you are female. Also the combination of Haverford/Bryn Mawr for studio/art history respectively.
If you’re looking for good visual arts programs at various colleges and universities, you might want to search the NASAD database. It gives you the ability to search for accredited schools by state or name: https://nasad.arts-accredit.org/directory-lists/accredited-institutions/
